The Hitcher
★★★★½ Liked Rewatched

A hell fueled, homoerotic, Hitchcockian road trip through purgatory. The Hitcher is nihilism at its most entertaining.

Beautifully shot dust in headlights, homosexual subtext so heavy its borderline text, and a bleak, biblical destruction of innocence all perfectly disguised as road horror. The photography is sexy, the action is thrilling and abrupt. But, it's the intense, unsettling chemistry between our cat and mouse that really revs my engine. Come on guys, just kiss already.

I was not ready for how effective a thriller about a suit wearing, cigar smoking chimpanzee would be. Richard Franklin turns something that could be extremely goofy into something tense and gripping. The zany score by Jerry Goldsmith is delightful and De Roche's madman fingerprints are all over this cluster cuss work of art.

But the star of this Hitchcockian circus is the titular "Link". Truly sinister work from Locke the Orangutan. His performance comes off as seasoned actor not…

Four of the Apocalypse

Leave it to the Godfather of Gore to make the dusty spaghetti western that makes me cry. Equal parts brutal and brutally sweet, Four Of the Apocalypse moseys along through a bleak hellscape showing the power of found family.

The last act involves a town of men, all outlaws softened by the presence of a newborn. I can’t fully explain how the acts of love shown here soften this dusty soul of mine.

This time, Fulci decided to leave the maggots at home and he pumped this one full of heart

Django Kill... If You Live, Shoot!
★★★★ Liked Rewatched

The bombastic operatics from Django Kill's forefathers are nowhere to be seen. It is a languid Spaghetti Western, almost listless in its bloodshed.
First seen digging himself out of a grave, The Stranger sets on a path of vengeance with golden bullets fashioned by mysterious guides. He is more specter than a gunslinger, haunting the people of the town known as "The Unpleasant Place". He drifts, stumbling upon moral rot and bringing chaos in his wake.

A bizarre and violently wonderful time. Django Kill...If You Live, Shoot!, leaves you with gold inset wounds to the abdomen and greedy fingers trying to pick it free.

Popeye
★★★★★ Liked Rewatched

I could listen and maybe nod along with the criticisms of "Popeye", but ultimately they really don't matter to me. This is one of the most accurate animated to live action renditions I have ever seen. The frame is stuffed full of living cartoon characters and their antics. Every corner has the comics chaotic fingerprints....until it doesn't. And you are left with Shelley Duvall, alone, singing "He needs me" as she lankily waltzes through a darkened town. The silence would…

Mythic and Powerful

The first moment we see Dorthy and Toto walking, sepia drenched, along that dusty farm road, I begin to tear up. Sure, that is nostalgia speaking. But the other 99 percent of the time the emotion is drawn from a pure and perfect cinematic experience.

This is one movie where the hype is not enough.
