So yeah, the modern-day and future sections of this are basically lifeless fluff. They're not visually interesting or dramatically compelling. The film tries to wring some pathos out of the self-sacrifice of an AI, which I doubt would have been well-received in 2023 when this film was shot, and certainly doesn't land in the year-of-our-lord 2026.
Still, I've got to give this film credit for the prehistoric sections. The story of the neanderthal family teetering on the brink of extinction is genuinely charming and, as far as I can tell, scientifically well-founded.
