Beautiful and haunting footage. The fact that it was shot without the expectation that it would ever be seen by a wider audience makes the cameraman’s eye all the more impressive. A look into the suffering of the Gaza Strip during the Second Intifada, before Israeli “disengagement” and the abandonment of Israeli settlements. At the time of filming, Palestinians were being subjected to chemical weapons, Sharon’s assassination program, and the destruction of entire parts of the Strip by guided missiles…

So impressed with this one. Quite overt in its symbolism of the old world vs the new through the two main characters but it’s done very well. The building of tension in the first act was a masterclass. One of those movies that makes you appreciate the role of director.

Essentially the British version of TraumaZone. It shares a lot of the same strengths and weaknesses. I have such a love-hate relationship with Adam Curtis. I could watch his documentaries for days on end, but at the same time the nebulous politics of his films never lead you to any sort of conclusion aside from “well, everything is fucked.” While everything is fucked, that defining message doesn’t lend itself to constructive filmmaking.
