Renoir
★★★½ Watched

The girl understands death about as well as any 11-year-old child—or, for that matter, anyone—can. That's to say she knows it exists, but as for how the reality of death will affect her, the girl at the center of Renoir only has some vague notion.

Propeller One-Way Night Coach
★★ Watched

The only thing writer/director John Travolta might love more than planes (and, obviously, his family, with one member appearing in this movie and most of them being thanked at the end) is nostalgia. Propeller One-Way Night Coach, an adaptation of the first-time filmmaker's own book from almost three decades ago (making it doubly nostalgic, in a way), revolves around a child whose adult voice is provided by Travolta himself. The man simply will not stop talking about how much this trip from New York to Los Angeles a few days after Christmas in 1962 meant to him.

The screenplay for a parody version of One True Loves would likely be almost indistinguishable from the actual movie. This is a romantic melodrama so ridiculous in both its big details and its small ones that it's somewhat tempting to recommend the movie as an accidental comedy. The misguided sincerity of everyone involved, though, would probably make such an ironic recommendation crueler than an outright pan.

Backrooms
★★½ Watched

The impossible space at the center of Backrooms doesn't need an explanation to be unnerving. The fact that nothing about it makes a bit of sense is, after all, a significant reason why this place is so creepy.
