Inadequate development of and integration of the folklore, poor acting on Adam Scott’s part. Overly long.

Trite, obvious, low-brow humor. Utterly unrealistic — no sponge would behave like this.

The film is full of such idiotic behavior that was so utterly unintelligible that I couldn’t ever get immersed in it. I’m not sure if it was trying to be a comedy (and fell totally flat) or a serious film (that fell totally flat), but either way, well, it fell totally flat. The mix of genres was just incoherent, and the film dragged on badly. About 75 minutes in I was begging for it to end, but it just kept going. The only positives were the cinematography and Yiran Zhou’s acting.
