Enjoyable take on a 'modern day' critique of the sci fi apocalypse thriller, with plenty of humor to make this a fun watch. All star cast delivers. Not sure the short story anthologies quite work together - but are delightful/insightful as 'black mirror' highlights.
Not much left to chew on after the flick heads on down the inevitable path it charts - with potential spoilers ahead - 'groundhoggin' within Sam Rockwells characters perpetual hero fantasy. Is this a statement of acceptance? That Ai has spun humanity on the hamsters wheel? Or a jesters provocation at a concept where they themselves are unsure where the answer lies.
As far as modern silent films go, it's one of the more inventive that I've seen (which is relatively few), exploring a somewhat simple premise it felt as if it had more in common with the early greats than say the modern stylings of Blancanieves or The Artist, although it gleefully indulged in modern fantasy and/or stylistic elements as if it were a Dr. Seuss story or a Wes Anderson flick. Holy Fuck! If there is a cooler film than this I'd be gobsmacked (If any I'd suspect the French, 'Here's lookin at u Melville'). I don't think the film could have been more tailor made for entertaining me with the blending of the bloody Italian horror aesthetic and western genre that I've slowly begun to become familiar with. I do seriously think that my learners knowledge of 30-40-50s westerns and Italian film played a seriously big part in appreciating it…
