Magazine Dreams

While I was digging up some info about this film, I came to realise that Elijah Bynum, the director of Magazine Dreams, was also the one responsible for the movie Hot Summer Nights. The shift is even more surprising, especially when you realise how much different they both are. Where his previous film left me rather cold, this one is far more intimate, more suffocating—less concerned with surface and much more with what festers underneath.

As a character study, the…

The numbers speak for themselves. No nation and people should ever go through such an oppression; a child should never be a target, nor should they go through such horrific oppression, not able to have an education, food, water and medicine. The Voice of Hind Rajab isn't easy to watch, and it shouldn't. Truth at its ugliest form.

If you ever have the possibility to do so, consider helping and informing yourself about NGOs like Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS)

Souleymane's Story

I had heard a lot about L'Histoire de Souleymane when it was released in France, but I never got the chance to see it in theaters. Having finally watched it, I understand why it generated so much acclaim and why many considered it an important film. By focusing on the daily life of a migrant and political refugee who left everything behind in the hope of building a better future, Boris Lojkine crafts a story that feels both deeply personal…

Lady Di: I've seen this movie before, doctor. I've never needed a blood transfusion and I never pierce my veins. The only drug I use is a joint now and then... when I watch TV or for a little romance.
Médico: And partners, how many?
Lady Di: Oh, about 2000.

Having already seen Pixote, I knew I was dealing with a filmmaker intimately familiar with the harsher realities of Brazilian society. And, unsurprisingly, Carandiru continues that interest, transporting us inside…

Lilja: I'm not your property. Think you can buy me? You can't buy me. You can't buy my heart and soul.

The whole story is a descent of Lilja to hell; even if we, the viewer, understand the reality of things (as well as Volodya, a kid who is far too mature for his age), she sees every time a deliverance in her life. When we see the synopsis, we all quite guess that Lilja will end up in prostitution,…

Jamis: The mystery of life isn't a problem to solve, but a reality to experience. A process that cannot be understood by stopping it. We must move with the flow of the process. We must join it. We must flow with it.

As someone who deeply loves Frank Herbert's book Dune, I couldn't help but get excited for witnessing its adaptation from my favorite director Denis Villeneuve. My expectations were high, very high, and only that man could ever surpass…
