Virtual Love

The third Fantasia short feels more experimental, still channeling the Lynchian vibe all of these have been. It's a quirky little tale about virtual worlds, and using them to explore desires and fabricated identity.

The music combined with very generic locations and personalities actually came together perfectly to be off-putting, strangely liminal, like being trapped in Active Worlds or IMVU or something. Really captured the vibe well, even if the narrative is pretty straightforward.

「私の呪いを解いて」

A quiet, haunting, beautiful film. Fatal Frame is a game series I love, though this film doesn't follow the lineage of the Camera Obscura or feature any camera ghost battles, but somehow it still feels authentic to the series.

Parallels to Ophelia, subtle and brooding atmosphere, sapphic horror, I kinda just love it. Mari Asato's masterpiece.

The Rage: Carrie 2
★★★½ Liked Watched

I don't think this is anywhere near as good as Carrie, but at the same time I really liked it. Emily Bergl is amazing, and the film tackles toxic masculinity and rape culture head on in a way that has catharsis, but holds an uncomfortably bitter reality to it as well.

Loved this, the fitting final piece in my journey through Evangelion. Incredibly expressive, and for those of us who maybe weren't entirely satisfied by the end of the rebuilds this speaks to us. On top of that, it's funny and charming as hell. Asuka arguing with Asuka is amazing, perfectly on brand.

Baby Assassins Everyday!
★★★★★ Liked Watched

Where the third film felt like spectacular culmination, Baby Assassins as a show feels like truly understanding the characters and the form that works best for the series. The hype fights and intense brutal action are just as important as the girls eating and discussing the prices of meals, as them chilling on the couch and zoning out, as them talking about everyday nothings. Love these two, and them telling each other how they feel was such a great moment!

Ninth film in the Showa-era special uploads on YouTube here (you do need to either be in Japan, or on a VPN), I'll try remember to update this and remove the link once it's no longer available.

Feels like a giallo, between the complex and at times confusing plot, the constant turns, the cool weird music, it's got this uncanny sorta vibe to it early on that I really like. The first half is this intriguing and chaotic setup, destroying…
