Michael Keaton gives an outstanding performance. We’re also treated to Kathy Baker and Morgan Freeman.
This is the kind of studio theatrical release we don’t really get anymore.
A movie for grown folks (adults is a better word, but this isn’t an adult movie), about grown folks, going through situations they’ve created for themselves and having to face them like grown folks.
It’s unlikely this movie would do much business today and I don’t think it did in 1988, either. But I’m glad it’s around. In a world of endless distractions, I was really pulled into this one.
This movie has everything! Baseball, prayer, kids in the system, Brenda Fricker trying her hardest to do an American accent, Danny Glover being annoyed, Angel Stadium exterior, but Oakland’s stadium interior, Matthew McConaughey, Adrian Brody and Tony Danza. Plus Christopher Lloyd as an angel. Definitely one for the family if that’s your jam. Pretty good visual fx for ‘94.
I wasn’t expecting it to be this different from the book. Having her work with deaf children was an interesting change. Great soundtrack.
