The Lost Weekend: A Love Story

To hear May Pang talk about John Lennon feels so much more reliable than anything that ever came out of Yoko Ono’s mouth.  There is a love and reverence, something that doesn’t seem self serving. Their story is told through interviews, sound bites, and May’s personal photos, and her side of the story is constantly corroborated by people in the know. And that’s what makes this documentary good. Rarely is anything involving John taken seriously or not covered in sarcasm or mystery. It’s straightforward and loving. And it continues to show what a mess Ono as to his life and everyone around him.

My daughter wanted to watch this. One minute in, she was regretting her choice but too stubborn to give up. Twelve minutes in, she asked to switch if we could watch it with RiffTrax.  I obliged, gratefully.  I have never seen the play, but the movie is just ENDLESS sung introductions to new cats who have no affect on the story(?). And every other word is made up, so after 100+ minutes, we still have no idea what these cats are yapping about.  I’m embarrassed for everyone involved.

This may be the single most accurate depiction of a film set in a movie. Well, top 10 anyway. Self-aware, smart twist on every Lifetime Christmas movie ever that is shot, acted, and written better than them all. It won’t become a Christmas tradition, but I may revisit again in the future.

I was beginning to think everyone was crazy. The praise this film gets wasn’t lining up to what I was watching. Until it do. What a switcheroo! The way the men in this film view women - the way the world views celebrity - what fans feel their owed… it’s still too real almost 50 years later.

Also, those were the thickest pancakes I’ve ever seen. That was not a euphemism.
