Backrooms
★★★½ Watched

What a year for horror! Although I feel a little mixed about this one, the backroom sections are perfectly done and tense. If it had been just that then I think this would be rated higher for me but the plot tries to be a little too theme heavy and doesn’t give itself enough time to stick the landing. I was basically over it by the dinner scene. Still, the horror is fun and, as someone who used to watch these on YouTube, it was cool to see the world expanded.

If this ever goes mainstream The Room better watch out. Like a David Lynch film but bad.

Wuthering Heights
★★★½ Watched

Not ashamed to admit this made me cry at the end. I think the biggest thing going against it is the name. If it was just a stylized period piece I think you’d find the reviews to be much kinder. But if Kate Bush can write a song about Wuthering Heights that has nothing to do with the book (a song that people love), then you can watch this adaptation with eyes unclouded by preconceived opinions.

So. Damn. Funny.

Easily one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a while. Reminiscent of all the best 2000’s Bro Comedies with a heavy pinch of modern absurd melancholy. Tim Robinson’s timing and raw physical energy is impeccable. And although Paul Rudd is no slouch, he remains the highlight throughout the run. I was skeptical this could actually be funny the whole time but in a packed house we were all belly laughing together nonstop. See it.
