Oppenheimer is a high-stakes drama with dense scientific and political dialogue, edited in a defiantly unchronological order at a dizzyingly fast pace. It is the exact opposite of a “summer blockbuster,” and it is also one of the best movies I have seen in recent years.

Fascinatingly unsettling. Crazy that this was made by a 20-year-old director, but it’s no surprise if you’ve ever seen any of Kane Parsons’ YouTube shorts. The kid is already a pro at making viewers afraid not of the dark, but of bright, beige, liminal “spaces between spaces,” and the monsters therein.

This is how I know Star Wars is dead: the online chatter about this movie would have you believe The Mandalorian and Grogu is somewhere between Solo and The Rise of Skywalker in terms of quality. People saw the infamous TV characters on their phone screens in early trailers of The Mandalorian and determined that the movie looked cheap and, ahem, TV-like, and that Star Wars was dead.
