A fantastic portrait of a society held in tradition slowly being drained away by immigration to America and the neglectful incompetence of a faraway government. Gian Maria Volonte is delightful as the central figure, a quietly contemplative man who approaches each provincial idiosyncrasy with fascination and bemusement. I love the adorable dog he picks up immediately after entering the country.

Feels a decade ahead of its time. This sort of entertaining yet tense crime drama full of colorful characters is exactly the sort of thing Tarantino would popularize in the 90s. Still, it’s got a uniquely British sensibility about it. Violence and dialogue are dealt very dryly, which is something I always love. Great performance by John Hurt as an aggressively unamused stoic, but Tim Roth really steals the show as a compellingly moronic henchman-in-training. Very funny to see Fernando Rey in a movie like this.

A good representation of the sort of wackos you find in the bare outposts of civilization. There are those who have nowhere else to go, and those who become so insane or drunk that they like it. As an Alaskan it feels all quite familiar. That tagline is fantastic.

This film really captures how the most harrowing events of your life will drag, meander, and generally go nowhere as you try to make them end. Cassavetes understands how social situations move and mutate as the people in them try to find their way out.
