i've realized that to truly appreciate pialat one needs to watch it within the confines of a darkened theater, where they can transfix themselves to the screen and let the imagery wash over them. it's a unique type of meditative cinema that requires ones complete attention to every nuance, as without this the lethargic pace and measured mise-en-scen makes it exceedingly difficult for the film to connect. which makes it a real shame that i just bought five of his movies on blu ray that i'll be viewing in my apartment in ny while distractedly scrolling through instagtam on my phone
i kind of admire that josh safdie has made the same four movies in a row. jew runs around new york trying to get money. each iteration is better and has a higher budget with more elaborate set pieces than the last. this one is the best of the four. that doesn't change the fact that it's the same movie as uncut gems, which was the same movie as good time, which was the same movie as heaven knows what.…
