Promotion Spotlight: Second Sight Films

Second Sight Films has long been the gold standard for collectors who demand nothing less than the definitive version of cult cinema. Specialising in high-quality restorations and impeccably curated editions, the label has built a formidable reputation for treating underground gems with the prestige they deserve. Their catalogue is a masterclass in variety, ranging from the sweltering dread of rural folk horror to the slick, neon-drenched pulses of modern psychological thrillers. Whether it is a forgotten masterpiece or a contemporary…

The Childhood Pact: Guillermo del Toro’s Beautiful Monsters

It is a rare thing to witness a filmmaker reaching the summit of their craft, but with his recent BFI Fellowship cementing his place alongside titans like Kurosawa and Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro has done just that. He has become cinema's great custodian of the misunderstood, reclaiming the shadows as a sanctuary for the things we should love rather than the things we fear. He has spent a career arguing that the monstrous is the only honest thing left in…

Ani-May 2026: 10 Essentials of Anime Cinema

For a long time, being an anime fan felt like being part of an underground club, a world of niche imports and a persistent stigma that it was something to be outgrown. But that landscape has shifted. We have moved past the era of "cartoons" and into a space where the medium is recognised for what it actually is: a global cultural juggernaut setting the pace for modern storytelling.

Superman: A Hero for Every Era on Screen

Today, 18th April, marks Superman Day, a fitting moment to reflect on one of cinema’s most enduring figures. Across decades of film, Superman has remained a constant presence, yet never a static one. Each iteration reflects not only advances in filmmaking but shifting attitudes toward heroism, power, and identity.

James McAvoy & the cast talk to hmv | California Schemin'

When James McAvoy and the cast of California Schemin’ sat down with us, the conversation bounced between jokes, chaos, and some genuinely thoughtful insight. Beneath it all, McAvoy gets into why this story hit close to home — from working-class roots to the lack of representation on screen.

hmv’s Favourite Best Picture Winners

Awards Season is like cinema’s own World Cup, only with more dresses that the internet will argue about and fewer penalty shootouts. At the centre of it all sits Best Picture, the prize that sparks endless takes, late-night tweets and at least one person saying “It deserved better.” Some winners feel like they were written in the stars, others are baffling in hindsight, and a handful quietly slip into history and refuse to leave.

Promotion Spotlight: Shameless Films

Shameless Films have long been champions of the boldest, sleaziest, and most gloriously excessive corners of cult cinema. Specialising in Italian genre fare that once lurked on the fringes of video shop shelves, the label has built a reputation for bringing these notorious classics back into the light with striking restorations and those unmistakable yellow spines. From spaghetti western shootouts to supernatural nightmares and unabashedly lurid exploitation oddities, Shameless releases rarely do anything by halves.

A review from Cal at hmv Norwich:

Rutger Hauer steals the show in this cat-and-mouse thriller, directed by Robert Harmon.

This film is loved by a large portion of our staff members, and for good reason. After picking up a rogue hitchhiker on the road, C. Thomas Howell is quickly stalked and framed by Hauer for several murders. This leads to an incredibly suspenseful 100 minutes, jam-packed with beautiful cinematography, anxiety-inducing, dream-like sequences, and an awesome soundtrack to top it off.

Amélie
Liked

Cult director Jean-Pierre Jeunet's Amélie is whimsy made manifest. It's the cinematic equivalent of jumping into bed with a hot drink and a good book, while listening to the rain fall outside. Audrey Tautou, as the central Amélie, might as well have fallen out of a fairy tale herself, lost in a world of bizarrely outlandish characters and a hyper-colourful, endlessly expressive version of Paris that could almost have spilt off the pages of a comic book. Her search for romance is as beautiful and heartfelt as it gets, punctured by all the wonderfully French humour you can shake a baguette at.

It's been called the worst film ever made by some, but I'm having none of it. No film as wildly entertaining and with so much passion driving it could ever be truly bad. Ed Wood's masterpiece is a clarion call to all us wayward ghouls whose idea of a great time is trashy midnight movies, plenty of popcorn and 5 minutes of Bela Lugosi. No film has ever come as close to being lifted from the pages of the pulpiest…

Top Gun
Liked

Few films capture the essence of an 80s blockbuster quite like Top Gun.

This is high-concept Don Simpson & Jerry Bruckheimer at their peak, crafting the biggest film of 1986 alongside director Tony Scott. This is Tom Cruise on the brink of stratospheric fame; Val Kilmer in his most iconic role; topless beach volleyball and feeling the need for speed.

In the 40 years since its release, Top Gun has spawned countless imitators and one of the greatest sequels of all time in 2022's Maverick, cementing its place in Hollywood history.

Whack on your aviators and get on the highway to the Danger Zone.

Alfonso Cuaron is a genius. Children of Men is a dystopian and eerily familiar film that will forever remain relevant and important. It has one of my all time favourite opening scenes, that brilliantly encapsulates the danger and fury of living in a world gone mad. It's quite rightly known for its thrilling long takes, that all cinematographers can only dream of reaching. But it also understands how to create quietness amongst the chaos, with Clive Owen and Michael Caine stealing the show and somehow making a pull my finger joke sad. If you haven't watched it, it's definetly one to check out.

Seriously great, and currently available on our Second Sight label promotion on Blu-Ray or 4K UHD.

With the beautiful backdrop of modern day Tokyo: Rental Family is a tender tale of a lonely American actor (played by Brendan Fraser) who’s lost his sense of direction in his career.

He finds a rather unusual job in a ‘Rental Family’ service, which requires him to stand in different roles for strangers.

As relationships go beyond professional to personal, he rediscovers his purpose and the beauty of human interaction and connection.

An absolute must-see if you’re wanting a chilled, feel-good film.

Between this and The Drama, relationships are being tested more than ever this year!

Obsession is a fantastic horror debut, exceptionally creepy and shocking with so much nuance and it avoids all the cliches. It doesn’t hold back. It’s fun and frightening. A true must watch
