Like a mean-spirited, unfunny and reactionary version of Kind Hearts and Coronets.
It had a compelling premise, but like the director’s previous, Promising Young Woman, had an incredibly defeatist perspective of the world it created, though I did prefer that film overall.
I’m not even sure this works as satire, or if it’s merely the deeply cynical view of a successful person born into privilege.

Compelling and chilling critique of religious hypocrisy and authoritarianism. My belief that this was actually filmed in Iran was suspended for at least half an hour until I realised they’d mostly used Türkiye and Jordan as locations effectively.
The fictionalised story of the journalist and the thriller elements were strong, and the plot lost its way slightly as it tried to merge this with real life characters and events in the final act.
All that said, I would recommend this film as it’s watchable, well acted and with themes not often well explored in cinema.

If Douglas Sirk did European racism: The most humane film I have seen in a while. Both tender and shocking.
