Whereas Eddington felt like a piece of smug nihilism, Bugonia illustrates the ambiguity of our time in fantastical yet infinitely more relatable ways
"He's mad and he's invisible"
Such an interesting concept for a horror film, and I'm glad that it's both terrifying and delightfully funny. I love goofy humor and a good gag montage or two. Even amidst lots of chaotic violence and death, it's the way that Griffin manages to hold Dr. Kemp hostage that I found most unsettling. Don't watch if you want to be freaked out, but it's worth it for a fun time with a couple laughs and a few moments of unsettlingly wondering "what if?".
I read the story this is based on, Ghassan Kanafani's Men in the Sun, a few weeks ago, and this incredibly faithful to that. The direction masters Kanafani's fragmented storytelling perfectly. Some characters weren’t as grotesque on screen as they were described in the original tale, and the ending is slightly different, but I think you could watch this and get the same effect as reading its source material. The soundtrack was also used to great effect (including silence) and…

I don’t like movies that are just so sensory and have no substance (😜) beyond a simple message that could be said in a sentence. Monstro Elisasue was masterfully disgusting and had me ready to hurl at the nearest trash can, but the ending is just pure shock value. Much of my distaste for this movie probably comes from the fact that it was just what a group of us happened to decide to watch Tuesday afternoon, with little to…
A movie with a big imagination and some of the most stunningly grotesque practical effects I have ever seen, unfortunately it somewhat falls apart once I'm done sitting on the edge of my seat. Small characters are clearly dubbed over and the random mix of English and American accents (the latter of which sometimes are quite awful) is never explained and made it hard for me to fully engross myself in Hellraiser’s world. The special effects, especially towards the end,…
Watched for my mom's bday - a super engaging movie that never left me bored, but the acting was such a roller coaster (Sweeney being largely responsible for the lowest lows). Some of the writing and general plot sequences were so ridiculous that the audience noticeably laughed when they definitely weren’t "intended to". Even so, those problems could be more rooted in the source material than the director/writers themselves.
