Part 70s action film, part blaxploitation, part apocalyptic warning, part campy horror. The film slyly pacts more in than you’d expect. Some pacing and repeated plot hampers an otherwise entertaining film.
I can’t really see how someone would make a better monster action film than this. It’s everything the American Monsterverse movie strived to be, but it actually accomplishes it. With only a $15 million budget, somehow the visuals are far more impactful and beautiful. Totally surprised by this. First 15 minutes sucks, but once the premise is set up and Jack Black does Jack Black, the film is surprisingly charming. I don’t like the parents in this at all but the two kid leads make up for it. Can’t wait to see if this holds up after repeat viewings.
