One hell of a gut punch that stays with you. I love the screenplay here, connecting desperate characters to each other in unexpected ways. Somehow I could still empathise with each of them which is impressive.
The second enveloppe scene still haunts me to this day.
As I watch more of Charles Burnett’s filmography my appreciation grows for his style of directing. His characters are very lively and memorable with this story focusing on a quaint relationship between neighbours who have an imagination that both harms them and gives purposes to their lives together.
Burnett didn’t write this one, which is the case for his most well-known films. For that reason I probably didn’t enjoy it as much as the others I’ve seen, though I would have to familiarise myself with his work more to be certain. I’d love to watch a Burnett picture a second time.
