I predict this film will gain cult status for the way it captures the coming-of-age for a young woman in a world that isn’t sure she’s allowed to have opinions. Barbie Ferreira is a star and I really really hope she and Levack continue to work together. It’s hard watching the protagonist make such poor decisions but the pay off in the second half is deeply satisfying. Reminded me of Reality Bites, but this is a better film.
The biggest absurdity in this mess is the rather quaint and dated notion that if the American people knew their president was a rage monster it would destroy him politically. I mean even before Trump’s second win, this was clearly wrong. Fear of failure has pretty much destroyed the brain trust at Marvel Studios which once seemed so infallible.
