This 5½ hour film has been hated on so much I felt intimidated to watch it. It was like the one big outlier in Lars von Trier's filmography — and when I did start to watch it, I went into it with the preconception that it was going to be bad. BUT, this film managed to win me over a lot and it turned into something so unbelievably tragic and poignant that a lot of other Trier films try to achieve but rarely manage.

"Aleksandr Rou" is quickly becoming one of my new favourite directors. Such a whimsical and lovely style. Those miniatures, over—the—top campy acting, light-hearted spirit with some really creative aesthetic choices. It took a couple minutes for me to get warmed up to this film—I did enjoy his other film, "Kingdom of Crooked Mirrors" more—but once it started it was a really delightful time.
