truly a beautifully realized film; clearly much time and effort was expended on the cinematography with its composition and lighting, immaculate color grading, soundtrack, and scene progression. the baptism sequence in particular stands out most prominently as an example of innovative storytelling in both a visual and symbolic scope. the film truly does look and feel ahead of its time. and as for its characters and their conflicts, they are also outstandingly well done. a primary example of this is…
"I didn't think you'd fall in love with me."
"I didn't either."
this film has my praise for making itself feel as intimate as it does with 0 actual explicit scenes. it commits strongly to restraint as its main approach, and as a result, there’s very little escalation or any decisive action between the main characters. the atmosphere, music, coloring, and framework end up doing a lot of the storytelling here. fortunately, they’re strong enough to carry that weight
a very personal and emotionally raw film that examines the inherently complex nature of human identity and the challenge of what it means to truly know oneself amidst all the constructed versions we create of ourselves, and the ability to come to terms with it all
