1917

Simply put - 1917 is stunning. As the credits rolled, I felt myself welling up and it took me several minutes to compose myself. That was in part due to the fact that 1917 packs an emotional punch, but more than that it was a feeling of being completely overwhelmed by what I’d just experienced. And possibly therein lies the secret of what makes 1917 so incredible - it doesn’t just feel like a film you watch, it feels like…

“That’s right m**********r!”

I feel like I owe the Letterboxd community an apology. I saw this film’s low rating and assumed that, whilst this was probably pretty bad, it couldn’t be that bad could it? Well it turns out that the rating is more than justified!

As it is, The Requin is barely a shark movie anyway. Firstly, certainly don’t expect the beast from the poster to turn up (the actual shark is more like the poster’s tiny distant cousin).…

“A place. I found a place.”

As the credits began to roll, I was initially unsure of how I felt about this film. But with every passing minute since I’ve realised that I think I actually kind of loved it.

But I…

I didn’t expect to love this as much as I did!

Sinners is like a 1930s gangster movie that slowly transforms into a southern gothic horror - and both of these elements are done fantastically!

The setting is really evocative, the performances are great (in particular Michael B. Jordan) and the themes are fascinating!

One theme in particular that runs throughout Sinners is that of the power of music - both its physical power and its spiritual power. Sinners explores…

The Fantastic 4: First Steps

I can’t quite put my finger on what it was but there was something about this that felt slightly odd. Even though it was 115 minutes long, it felt almost brief? Like I was so surprised when the credits started rolling because I was expecting more to happen!

I guess that could be considered a good thing, because the running time flew by, but I also felt like some of the character development was missing. I’m assuming that maybe a…
