Casbah (1948) is a pathetic Hollywood remake of The French phenomenon Pépé le Moko (1937), directed by Julien Duvivier (also director of Anna Karenina 1948 adaptation starring Vivien Leigh). It based of the 1937 novel of the same name by Henri La Barthe.
Here it’s directed by John Berry and stars Yvonne de Carlo and Tony Martin as some sort of Hollywood musical in which it was miraculous nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song for the song…

My favourite Hitchcock film. 
I’ve read the book by Daphne Du Maurier, written around in 1938, around a year prior to the beginning of filming. Again like most older films that are based off books, they tend to stick to the actual storyline like this film does.
Though Hitchcock’s first American film, the film still shows its English roots as it has an English director, English characters, actors and is set at the fictional mansion of Manderley in the countryside…
