This is ostensibly the platonic ideal of a western, and with a very important angle: that the cowboy hero isn't civilized. The stranger, Con Vallain (Sam Elliott) is kind of a creep for a lot of this. He's very uncool towards another man's wife; not vile, just rude. And these are people he is helping out, not (just) because of her, but because he knows the family is in over their heads.
