Eye popping and gnarly special effects live up to the film's reputation as one of the most insane things to come out of Hong Kong. But it plays like a sizzle reel. There's a very basic plot, a vengeful boxer turns monk to fight dark forces, but there's no characterisation. They're more or less just action figures being attacked by the rest of the toy box.

Combined with unforgivable stretches of un-dubbed silence, i would almost threaten with calling this one boring. A spooky train ride at the amusement park, a very creative one, but ghouls popping out has a very low ceiling for being "compelling".

Its my birthday so I get to the pick the movie! And lo and behold, this was playing as a retrospective screening.

Nothing in the movie is as funny or satisfying as watching my friends (and an inexplicably packed house) twist in their seats as they realise that, yes, the movie is going there.
