For Woo, the constant splattering of blood and debris is more a romantic gesture than any. Two men embracing a shared future in eternal purgatory as their souls fly away in the form of the ever omnipresent dove. Was surprised to see such a strong a concern for action as a vehicle for intimate melodramatics as opposed to the beautiful, yet nonetheless brutish violence of Hard Boiled. When initially coming back to this, I was interested in writing a larger piece regarding the Hollywood film conscious and its almost primordial desire to escape into childhood (and generally, the concept of the western), but I feel that concept would be far better fitting for a more complicated yet bad film like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood because there's just simply not enough here. As I entered the theater for this film, just a few hours after watching Tarkovsky's Mirror, I couldn't help but feel an ever so omnipresent anxiety creep up on me. I decided to go out of my way to watch one of the most talked about films of the year, a film that I knew I would likely dislike and get harassment for over the internet, but it was a choice I still had unfortunately made regardless.
