Despite the excessive hype for "the new horror auteur" pushed by Focus and Blumhouse, this is a good movie with a lot of entertainingly weird scenes and great acting by Inde Navarrette. The beginning is WAY too Gen Z for me. Whereas Talk to Me got me really interested and invested in these young kids, Obsession just made me feel old and uninterested. But it picked up once the "wish" kicked in. It never was scary, it just was cringy…
I just got back from Mexico City and seeing the ancient Teotihuacan ruins and various artifacts from pre-Colonial Mesoamerica. So what's in the first horror movie I cue up? An Aztec death whistle. If only customs hadn't confiscated mine! Pretty fun, well-crafted horror movie with a cool hook and some very original, goretastic kills. Check it out!
A bit of a twist in presenting the typical paranormal investigator finds the real thing and disappears. Perhaps it was the influence of Mike Flanagan as his name and credits appear when the film flips format. Bottom line it's creepy and depraved which is what we want, right?

Maybe I shouldn’t have rewatched the 1922 and 1979 Nosferatu films right before seeing Eggers version. I set my expectations too high. This is a good movie. No doubt. It deserves praise and a big audience.
