At its best when it commits to the tactility and spatiality of the camcorder (when it gets picked up? Great stuff). A lot less good when it opts to pad itself out with Real Movie Scenes, which coterminate with clumsier exposition. Very admirable debut.

Zendaya, who I was absolutely arctic on in Challengers, has found a home for those eye contortions as the grown-up version of a MSN Messenger Paul Street kid from Bumfuck, Ohio. Impeccable casting. Very much enjoyed RPat's physical acting - love his ability to crumple his entire gangly body like a dead spider when he's confronted with Da Horrors. Impressive editing for an hour, sadly eschews it for the latter half.

Del Toro's sensibilities hit a sclerotic nadir. Shambling and turgid and not in a good way. All the tragedy and complexity of Shelley's work or the 1931 adaptation are sucked out in favour of childish dualisms and banal lessons from them - father and son and forgiveness, man and god and mania. Half-baked dualism is reflected in its structure too, which batters you over the head with a moustache-twirlingly evil first half dedicated to Victor, and saccharine fairytale second half…
