Hideaki Anno is everything to me, and this is damn near his masterpiece which says a lot. If it wasn't for the stupid American Ambassador character, which the studio clearly forced upon Hideaki, this would be a five-mic classic.
If someone made season 3 of the wire (the one about politics), set it in Tokyo, replaced the drug crisis with Fukushima, and then replaced Fukushima with a giant Radioactive mutating lizard, this is what you'd get, and it's every bit as amazing as it sounds.

Everything dies. You. Me. Everyone on this planet. Our sun, our galaxy and, eventually, the universe itself. This is simply how things are. It's inevitable. And I accept it. What I will not tolerate -- what I find unacceptable -- is the unnatural acceleration of that end. Which is why we were summoned here... as the untimely end of everything is what we now face

Finally my favorite comic book has a solid cinematic entry.

Still an inimitable stylistic masterpiece after all these years.

This is one of the best movies ever made. IDK what else to say.
