I recently read Roger Ebert's Scorsese (obviously) and his line about Raging Bull has been rattling in my brain: "A film is not about its subject; it's about how it's about its subject."
It feels like nearly every piece of this film is hiding in plain sight - from its title to its "monumental" set pieces to its tagline to its themes on enduring pain (emotional and physical), building legacies, the dangers of materialism, etc. etc. etc.
Is all of this in your face a little bit? Yeah. Is that a bad thing? Not if you ask me.
