Lance McGowan (Richard Barthelmess) returned to New York following a few months in Europe. Angie the Ox (Robert Barrat) sore about McGowan cleaning his poker table, gives it to him straight. While on the boat, he meets Joan (Helen Lowell), unbeknownst to him that she is Angie's little sister. When Angie's hoodlums try to gun Lance down, he seeks refuge in Abigail's (Helen Chandler) mansion, which is never locked.
She recounts the story of her youth as a motivation for Lance to go after Joan. Lance's friendship with Abigail will prove to save his life and relationship with Joan.
