The competence in the filmmaking is sometimes undercut by the stubborn, almost formulaic writing choices. I like the way Vignesh Raja and Alfred setup small pockets of setups and payoff in lines of dialogue (you are just talking to me out of formality right, sir?) that come back in their films in smart ways. Cleared the insane bar this franchise has set for itself, though some of the red herrings and distractions felt out of place in this one. A few of the emotional beats felt abrupt towards the end and leaves a gimmicky after taste. That is both, a good thing and a bad thing depending on your threshold for the inevitable retconning of character traits to fit the progression of the franchise arc requirements. Jeethu Joseph breaks his pact with the audience and subverts what we expect from 'Georgekutty' in this entry, ending up with a fascinating deconstruction of his bafflingly inert creation.
A newly appointed prison warden takes it upon himself to set things right in a high profile prison rampant with corruption and unfair treatment of the inmates. Robert Redford lends much gravitas to the incorruptible prison warden who sticks on to his principle over immoral systematic strategies on any given day.
Gena Rowlands delivers arguably the finest performance by an actress of all time in this intriguing character piece.
