A made-for-TV masterpiece that was a true document of its time. The cast is beyond loaded with talent… Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry, Little Richard, Simon & Garfunkel, Van Dyke Parks, Cheech Marin, ZZ Top, Brian Setzer, Bobby Brown, the Del Rubio Triplets, Woody Harrelson, Teri Garr, Katey Sagal, Howie Mandel, Jean Stapleton… and starring the duo of Shelley Duvall and Dan Gilroy, who actually met and fell in love during the filming.

The music numbers are catchy (🎶Hop To It!🎶), the…

I’m in awe of how much high quality behind-the-scenes footage has been assembled here. It really captures the excitement of the era and the feeling of possibility that existed during the space race. I’m not much of a patriotic person, but watching this really helps me understand how events like the Apollo missions infused such strong national pride into the American psyche.

I think it’s most interesting to look back at this and see everything that NASA accomplished in a time well before an Internet-connected world and so many of the digital technologies we have today. Oh, and the Brian Eno score is just superb.

What a trip! A ruthless ad executive develops remorse about his unscrupulous practices, only to have a sentient boil form on his neck to drive him mad and act as the devil on his shoulder (literally). A surreal dark comedy about the incompatibility of morality within capitalism. Includes a bit of body horror puppetry and lots of grandiose monologues by Richard E. Grant. It was a bit much at times, but I admire how committed the film is to its demented story.

Weird and wonderful! So much to love about this film, from the colorful styling and bubbly characters, to the quirky sound design and enchanting songs.

It does feel a bit undecided about whether it’s a profound statement on the perils of late-stage capitalism, versus just a goofy story about relationships and finding yourself; it does both, but the latter aspects are a bit more successful. Thankfully nothing is too heavy-handed.

The thing I appreciate most about this little indie gem is how fully it embraces its silliness. There’s a welcomed freshness to Glander’s creative vision, and I really look forward to what he does next.

“I grew up in Europe, where the history comes from.”

The BEST comedy special. I’ve been quoting this for 20+ years, first becoming obsessed with it in high school, even without fully understanding all the jokes at the time. And despite references to Bill Clinton and 90s films, it’s surprising just how much of the content holds up or is still equally relevent well into the 2020s (gender identity, Christianity, school shootings, American attitudes, etc.).

I’m pretty sure I’ve remembered more about world history from this two hour standup special than from any class I ever took in school. No one does it like Suzy.
