democrats: "george bush is a criminal"
democrat gets elected → nothing happens to bush
republicans: "barack obama is a criminal"
republican gets elected → nothing happens to obama
democrats: "donald trump is a criminal"
democrat gets elected → nothing happens to trump
republicans: "joe biden is a criminal"
republican gets reelected → nothing happens to biden
rinse and repeat for eternity
I fully understand this sentiment, but I think it’s important (and more hopeful) to be pedantic and say that, actually, things happened to Trump. Because, yeah, Trump is obviously doing fine now. But:
- Trump was impeached by the House in Dec 2019 for abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. (The Senate, a less democratic body, voted to acquit.)
- Trump was impeached for a second time by the House in January 2021 for incitement of insurrection. (The Senate voted to acquit.)
- In 2023, NY state charged Trump with 34 felony counts in criminal court, the indictment was approved by a grand jury, he was held in contempt of court for his behavior during the process. He was convicted of all counts, becoming the first president to be convicted of a felony. (This trial concerned Trump’s falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to porn Star Stormy Daniels.)
- On July 1, 2024, the Supreme Court ruled that Trump had immunity for acts he committed as president that were considered official acts, but that he did NOT have immunity for unofficial acts, which affected…
- There were two federal cases in progress against Trump before his reelection that were dropped upon his reelection because the Justice Department won’t prosecute sitting presidents. One of these cases that was dismissed was a federal criminal case against Trump for his attempt to overturn the 2020 election and for role in the January 6 attack. The other was a case in which a grand jury indictment brought 40 felony counts against Trump for mishandling classified documents after his first term.
- There was another case in August 2023 in Georgia that brought counts against Trump for racketeering, in the context of his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election—the case was dismissed in November 2025.
Obviously we are neck deep in the second Trump term, so none of these attempts made a difference. But they nearly did; or, they were close to making a difference. It takes time to prosecute criminal cases like these, and the cases that were dropped were dropped because Trump was President again. The NY case, which convicted him, didn’t have time to impose a sentence before he was again a sitting president, so no punishment was imposed.
(Which of course leads to a secondary and more horrifying question of “why are Americans voting for a felon???”)
I just think it’s better for our mental health to remember the thousands of hours people spent building these cases during 2020-2024 and, in the case of the NY case, actually convicting Trump of felonies. It isn’t true that nothing will happen to you if you shamelessly break laws as President, and I expect that similar cases will start to be brought the second he’s no longer a sitting president again.
