A cursed day in the life

Who: Spike and YOU
Where: all over the barge
When: starting about half a day before the curse starts and ending about half a day after.

[Breakfast time, though it's technically more like dinner for most people. Spike is pretty much on vampire time today. But not vampire food. He's got a plate of bacon and some coffee.]

[Considering all the controversy surrounding the place, Spike sometimes just avoids it. But he's out of things to read, and he doesn't feel like begging the admiral, so it's time to go check out the library's section. He wants a good novel, maybe something pulpy and entertaining. Or maybe he'll just find his way back to the poetry books again.]

[Chromie, the "official" librarian for the moment, looks up from the main desk and smiles, if perhaps a little tightly, when Spike walks in. Her desk is covered in thick tomes about decursing written in several languages.]

Hello. Do you need help finding anything?

Hmm? [He glances over and shrugs.] I'm just browsing. Won't know what I'm looking for till I find it.

Alright. Be careful near the higher shelves. It seems the curse likes to drop heavy books on your head.

[She rubs the spot between her braids as she speaks, sighing.]

[He glances at her for a moment, then nods.]

...I'll be careful.

[After getting his book, it's time to actually read it. He sprawls out over a couch and starts reading.]

[Spike is just here for a quick mug of blood, then he's leaving.]

[It's time for him to beat up a punching bag. He misses nightly patrols. But he's determined to stay in shape.]

[Spike's heading for the pub and lighting up a cigarette when all of a sudden, the barge shakes and instead of lighting the cigarette, he manages to get his face and his hand. He screams and immediately changes direction, diving for the pool while the fire starts spreading over him.]

[Spike is grumpy and badly wants a cigarette, but considering what a charred mess he already is, it's probably a bad idea. So instead he goes on a walk down the halls, drinking blood spiked with vodka and glowering at everyone.]

[Just passing, does a double-take.]

Why do you smell like fire?

[Turns and glares.] New shampoo. I don't think I'll stick with it.

[He decides to go make sure his inmate's doing all right in all of this. Unfortunately instead of knocking, he manages to trip and slam face first into her door. Well, it should get her attention.]

[Elphaba jumped at the sudden thud, sending her skeletal wing to the ground where it broke to pieces.] Drat! [Her room was a mess, as accidents seemed to be happening left and right. She turned, hurrying over to the door when her skirt caught on a small table leg, tipping the table over and sending her red crystal ball rolling to the ground.] No! [It didn't break, but she dove after it, cutting her arm on a piece of glass from some random bit of debris as she did so. She yelled. If Spike were to try entering the room, he'd find the door locked. Of all the times to lock her door.]

Elphaba! [Spike could smell blood. If something had happened to his inmate, then Howie be damned, he really would kill Sveta, now, without any waiting. The door is locked, but that doesn't stop Spike from opening it with his foot and some carefully applied vampire strength.]

[She groaned and stood, clutching her bleeding arm. It wasn't enough to be serious, but it was enough to be painful. She looked at Spike. He had a vortex above his head, too.] What is this?

Wish I knew, love. [He steps over and frowns, glancing at her arm.] You need to go to the infirmary?

I could give myself stitches. [She paused.] But I probably should go there to get patched up.

Come on. [He walks over and takes her by the arm.] Maybe between the two of us we can avoid getting too beat up.

[She nodded, walking with Spike.]

[Spike carefully closed the door behind him, glaring at it, then set off, one hand on the wall to try and keep him from tripping.]

This is bloody ridiculous. Like I'm not accident prone enough on a good day.

[Elphaba simply nodded.] I just hope no one spills a glass of water on me on the way.

...let's avoid the pool and the dining hall. [He takes his coat off and offers it to her.] Here. It's pretty good at resisting water. Try not to get too much blood on it.

[Pulling on the coat, she said,] I'll try.

It's not the end of the world if you do. That thing's bloody amazing when it comes to stains. [He shook his head.] I'd been planning on coming to see you anyway, you know. Before the curse stuff started.

"Oh? About what?"

"Just to check in. Been a while, you know? See how things are going."

"Things are...well enough. I'm not sure if you've been keeping up with what I've been doing through forum posts, but little has happened of note when you don't count this curse. At least, not since that last port."

[Spike nods seriously.] Been meaning to apologize about that. I should have found you. I looked, but... [He shook his head.] And then I ended up in my own trouble.

It's fine. I ran into Kay there. And an alien baby.

[He does a double take at that.] ...run that by me again?

Someone was trying to sell an alien baby. I rescued it.

Oh. [He does a double take.] Wait, without me telling you you should or anything like that?

I'm not sure why I did it. Maybe I felt kinship with it because it was green.

Or maybe you knew it was the right thing to do. You know, caring about others.

Maybe. I know I don't want to see any sentient creature sold like a thing.

[Spike nods seriously.] I feel the same.

What'd you do with the kid after?

I contacted the authorities who were looking for the parents. I planned to stick around to make sure everything worked out, but the Barge pulled me back.

Do you miss the child?

I...I"m not sure if 'miss' is the right word. I'm only...concerned.

Concerned?

I don't trust authorities, and I don't like that I can't check up on them.

[Spike nods. He has no love of authorities himself, so he gets it.] What about Liir?

What do you mean?

Are you concerned about him?

"Why would I be?" she snapped, mostly out of habit, but then she paused, actually thinking about it. "I suppose I am, a little, but I'm sure he'll be fine. Since no one knows he's my son they'll have no reason to harm him."

That gets a full on smile from Spike. "Glad to hear it. Hope someday you get to find out for certain."

And with that, he trips and crashes into a wall.
