A Day in the Life

Who: Victor Frankenstein and YOU
What: Victor continues his experiments using a Gameboy, a puzzle, wires from the TV Arthas destroyed, power sockets and very little conception of how dangerous electricity is.
Where: All over the barge.
When: Today.
Warnings: Nothing in particular. Epic failures of basic safety?

[Victor’s in the library, having found the section on electronics. He has no idea where he ought to start, so he’s busy staring at the shelf.]

[Chloe, still new on the Barge, has been exploring. She's walking through the library, looking at huge range of reading material available, when she turns the corner and comes face to face with Victor. Hey Victor, have a pretty lady to talk to.]

[Victor turns and oh hey. A pretty lady. He stares for a second, before smiling. Time to be friendly.] Hello. Are you searching for something in this place?

[She smiles back, keeping it shy and small. Then he speaks and her expression changes to a much more engaged interest.] Where are you from? [A pause.] I don't mean to be rude, I just-- that accent! What is it?

[Victor smiles. Someone mentioned his accent! Glorious day.] I am from Geneva, in Switzerland. [He pauses and looks at Chloe for a second.] I am also from a different time to many in this place.

Switzerland, wow, I-- [She starts to speak in the pause, but stops as he continues. Well that raises a number of questions.] A different time?

Yes. I am from the year 1818. [Victor says, looking at Chloe expectantly. He doesn't expect her to be from the same time.]

1818. You- [She stops, shaking her head. She's been doing a good job of not letting things actually get to her, but it's all accumulating. Time differences like that are pretty strange. She licks her lips and looks down.] It was 2009.

Yes, this is the time from which many originate. [Victor isn't surprised by this in the slightest. Chloe does not look like a girl of his time.] Do not fear. You will have many who know of the things that you do.

[Om nom nom, lunch time. Victor’s sitting at a table, fiddling with a battery with two wires at either end, a light bulb on the circuit and two lose ends. He’s touching the ends of the wire to different objects and looks to the light bulb to see if it conducts electricity and completes the circuit, causing the light bulb to shine dimly. His ring does. Food doesn’t. What a marvelous experiment.]

[Here’s Victor, fiddling around at the back of the television in the common room, connecting wires up to something that looks like it has a live connection. He’s about to connect to the small circuit, with a few little light bulbs on it. What could possibly go wrong?]

[Omega is frowning, walking through the Barge, trying to ignore a persistent jiggle that's telling him that killing Elric is somehow the solution to all his problems. He stops when he sees his young friend.] Ah, Victor?

Omega! It is good to see you. [Victor pauses, just about to stick the wires into the back of the television.] You have arrived just in time to see a marvelous experiment. I do believe that through this machine, I shall conduct electricity to fuel the smaller machine.

[He nods at the light bulb, before looking back to Omega.]

Well, yes… but you don't seem to be wearing an insulator. Of the electrical kind. The electricity might decide to go through you. And I'm afraid, you don't light up.

[Victor paused and looked down at his bare hands. After a second, he put the wires down and picked up a book that he'd laid down on the floor. He opens it to the index.]

I do not believe that I have taken note of this thing. What materials may be used to do this?

[Phew. Ok, Omega, now use those wires to kill Elric. Or not.] Rubber is the favoured material. Though any non-conductive material will do.

Oh. [Victor pauses. Frowns.] Rubber. Where shall I obtain such a thing?

Well, they can be in shoes. [He lifts up his own which are rubber soled, cause electricity totally an every day hazard for an inventing Time Lord.] And I'm sure the closet on our floor has rubber gloves.

I will go and find this closet, I think. [Victor sighs and puts his project on the ground. Maybe another time, light bulbs.] I hope you do not mind me utilizing some of your puzzles in this manner. It is for the sake of science.

No, not at all. I find it a most appropriate use for them, actually.

[Victor smiles, fiddling with his circuit.] Of course. They have become another mystery.

[Omega smiles back.] Exactly.

I am- [Victor pauses before continuing.] I am attempting to learn all I can of the electronics of the future. I suspect that you may be able to assist me, perhaps?

I would be happy to, Victor.

I thank you. [Victor smiles, but then looks concerned.] Although it is likely my warden would not approve of this.

Why?

There is a system. Of points and numbers. [Victor laughs, not unkindly.] It is his method of being a warden, it seems.

[Omega's interested.] A system? Tell me more?

Points, it seems, can be traded for things. These points are gained and lost through positive and negative actions that I perform. [Victor pauses.] Such as working in the infirmary and talking to the one known as Rex.

[It seemed a bit childish, though the warden in question apparently lived his life that way. Somehow, Omega doubted that Brax would respond to that particular system. Not seriously, at any rate.] Do you know how much each act is worth?

And how is my showing you science a negative action?

I have been told, but I do not remember. [Victor shrugs. He hadn't paid a great deal of attention to the system.]

I am not sure, but I do believe it may be so as it has not been earned through the points.

Hmm. I think you should perhaps seek clarification.

I shall do so. [Victor smiles.] You are most wise in this regard.

Thank you, Victor.

[Oh, dear. Apparently sticking things into other things is frowned upon. Not to mention that little battery circuit hurts. Victor’s in the infirmary, patching up the small burns that he’s managed to get on his hands.]

[Dinner time! What a wonderful day of learning. Victor’s at the table, having made a wonderful parallel circuit. Good thing that puzzle Omega gave him had so many little light bulbs, since a number of them didn’t survive the day.]
