Learning Has a Few Hurdles Sometimes [OTA]
Who: Chase and OTA
When: Pre-flood
Where: The library, on deck
What: Chase experiments with magic and sign language
Warnings: Spiders, as always; some small explosions
I. Projects - Deck
One of Chase's various projects has been scratched off his list. Qetzi is free of the Hill, for better or for worse. So he moves on to other projects. There's always more to learn, to accomplish, when it's magic you're working with.
So he goes up on deck and tries weaving magic into wings, using long arcs of his fingers to pull power together and shape it. They look like glass, see-through and shimmery, building them out of power alone. They're pretty, but don't look terribly useful. Yet, anyway.
Or he sets spiders down, disconnects them from his power temporarily while leaving them enough to remain manifest, and watches them scurry about the deck while he tests different means of dispelling them. This mostly looks like lobbing little bursts of power at them, while they explode, and he makes annoyed faces that they didn't explode right.
Or he sits on a deck chair in the greenhouse and... lets a mouse scamper around on the grass in front of him. Yes, this is technically related to a project, but mostly it's just watching his weird little pet play.
II. Lessons - Library
Sometimes he wants to learn things that aren't magic. Like, in this case, sign language. He has a couple books out on a table in the library and he's flipping through pages of drawings of hands. Every now and then he tries one, mimicking the drawings with one hand or both. It's quiet.
Until it's not. Chase's magic has a heavy kinetic component, and he always has it active. He makes a sign that flips one hand up over the other, and two books fly off the shelf behind him and bonk him on the shoulders. He spins around to glare at them in confusion, then flicks a hand and they fly back where they belong.
A few minutes later, he tries to finger-spell out a word, and the lamp on his table explodes.
"What the hell!" he exclaims, leaping out of his seat and glaring at it, too, until he looks from ruined glass and bulb to his fingers and back again.

Library
He'd just been walking over when the lamp suddenly explodes and he jumps, dropping his stack of books with a squeak and a clattering of thick textbooks.
Re: Library
Which he's starting to think he caused through sign language. What the hell.
Re: Library
Christopher starts picking up his books, a pile that is so tall it blocks his vision, and he comes over to the table Chase was working at to set them down. "What happened?"
Re: Library
"I think it was because I moved my hands just right and thought about magic," he says, sounding both annoyed and embarrassed. "My magic is very-- motion-driven. You use your body to direct the power. I'm trying to learn how to use my hands to talk, so I can talk with Maelle, and I think the magic just kind of happened."
Re: Library
"Interesting. How do you propose to fix this? what else is involved with doing magic?"
Re: Library
See? Very motion-driven.
Re: Library
Things like having a filter and knowing to keep intrusive thoughts to yourself arent Christophers strong suit.
Re: Library
Re: Library
"I've had plenty of messes in my time not knowing how to control myself when I was a kid...What sort did you make?"
Re: Library
Library!
Re: Library!
He's currently flexing his own fingers and frowning in thought, then glancing over at her when her hands move. He does pick those words out, half from context. "I was practicing that--" He points to her hands. "--and the lamp bulb blew up."
Re: Library!
So.. "you're okay?" She signs, just to make sure.
Re: Library!
Re: Library!
What were you doing when it happened? I mean
what exactly?
Maybe it's easily avoidable?
Re: Library!
Re: Library!
So you're saying you're
always
thinking about doing magic?
She's smiling and shaking her head even while she offers her device.
Re: Library!
Re: Library!
What happens if you
don't think about it? Do they just
disappear?
Re: Library!
He shrugs. "My magic was addictive, before I fixed it with my first deal. I had to use it all the time or I got twitchy, got headaches, felt sick, the works. It doesn't really do that anymore, but I'm still used to it."
Re: Library!
You know, you don't really have to learn it. Especially if it's dangerous for you like this. I can still just use this thing.
Re: Library!
Re: Library!
Maybe I can practice with you? Or if there's another way I can help?
Re: Library!
Re: Library!
This
is important.
She offers that first before adding another thought.
I don't
really understand your magic or anything. But isn't there a way for your spells to be
I don't know
just something you do once and then it manages itself?
She's thinking that Creations do just fine on their own. Painters don't actually need to maintain anything about them, and they don't consume more chroma just by existing. But then, painting isn't magic.
Re: Library!
Re: Library!
It sounds a
lot
harder than Painting.
Maybe just try spelling your name. Slowly.
