WHO: Ashton Carver, aka Lady Ashe Harwood // also Poppy Keo / Adamantea
WHAT: Around-the-Barge + The Old Smoke port
WHEN: Late April before port + during the first week of port (pre-Trevor)
WHERE: Around the Barge + around London
WARNINGS: potential reference to period-typical bigotry, further added if needed

Starting a few days before the port, Ashton is scarce for about a day, nearly nonexistent, before getting back to -- "normal" may not be the right word. He's a little more subdued than usual, generally keeping out of places Arthur or Sokie might be and seeking out John less, but generally he seems like he's fine; he works in the library, he practices with his powers in the Enclosure, sometimes he goes to the warden conference room and pages through the Inmate Ledger.
If asked if he's alright he'll just laugh it off -- it's nothing, really, he was just being dramatic and needed some space, you know how he is. He's still wearing a ring on each ring finger just as he's been since December, and his Dancer is now a snake that sits comfortably on his shoulders as it's been for about a week now -- if he was actually upset would he still have any of these things? Don't be ridiculous. He'll be fine!
This does not change the fact he's still sleeping during the day in Ulla's cabin, or that for anyone with the perceptions to sense such lingering feelings he's bleeding heartbreak and a tired sort of acceptance out and everywhere, no matter how convincingly he keeps up an external façade of being alright. Whatever's going on in his head isn't anything good.
And of course, on the day the Barge makes port he disappears entirely and stays gone for a week. Being overboard will do that.

The Lady Ashe Harwood is (in no particular order): relatively young, clever, unmarried, reasonably affluent, and no-one quite seems to remember exactly what the rest of her family is doing - or where or who they are - except for that her father is surely deceased, the poor dear. During evenings and nights she may be found in the Piccadilly and Points West area - out and about, or in her own estate ready to receive visitors - or at the Markets, browsing supernatural items. At all times she's appropriately attired for a lady of the era.
The weekly salons she holds are always popular with a certain sort; she likes to invite thinkers, scientists and writers and poets and artists alike, anyone who might see the world differently. (Especially if they may not be... entirely human.) Anyone bold enough to barge in of their own accord she'll entertain -- although their making it out alive is questionable.
She makes her rounds of all the other social events she ought to be at as best she can, despite the fact her distaste for other vampires is not particularly well-hidden.
And any rumors that you saw Lady Ashe out in the graveyards late at night, or walking with the grims that stalk the East Side -- surely those are just rumors. Don't mind the necromantic magic and metaphysical stink of death that permeate the grounds of her estate, or whatever powers you think you may have seen her use. Surely whatever made her eyes so green was only a trick of the light. Surely those dogs were only some of the hounds she already raises. ...right?
Sometimes she dresses in men's clothes, workmen's clothes, and visits places a well-to-do lady wouldn't be seen dead in; fighting rings, for example. As little as she regrets her decision decades ago to live her public-facing existence as a woman -- there are times where other options yet serve.
Making herself wholly unremarkable is a very easy kind of magic. No non-magical resident of London gives Poppy Keo a second glance unless she wants them to, and even most of the magical ones; her crystalline intrusions are hidden away, replaced with splotches of vitiligo that trace down her limbs, and though her features should mark her as a clear foreigner nobody seems to find it particularly noteworthy or interesting.
She likes cities! They always let her stretch out, metaphysically. She Knows so much of this city by the end of the first day, and it's soothing to not have to guess with interactions. (She leaves the Barge denizens alone the same she's been doing - she won't read them any deeper than surface unless they consent. She'll bring no harm here: only observe.)
Adamantea Poppy is always at the markets looking for the items the Admiral has requested, haggling politely-yet-firmly; she'll aid with others' bargains if she feels the shopkeep may be unfair. She's also down at the river, ethereal and faelike, feeding kelpies like they're tame ponies and getting along perfectly well with just about every fae entity she meets: they might not know her, they couldn't have ever met the lady of gardens prior, but they know what she is. These are the people she knows better than any other.
She always seems to be available near the Barge to help coax out passengers who might be shy or discomforted about leaving it. Even if she's... already somewhere else. 'One mind in one body' is such a silly rule to work by!
And she does let her current inmate Valentino wander, though she does it with a firm advisement: don't start getting into trouble. No, even if he can get out of it or get away with it. She will know.

All right. I'm fine now. So that means it's time to talk about why you feel heartbroken.
no subject
What are you talking about? I'm -- maybe still a little frustrated, but I'm fine, really. Or I will be.
[And that? That is a fucking lie. There are reasons Ash opted for vocalized conversation instead of telepathy at the outset of this, when they first asked what was going on: it's much, much easier to get away with lying.]
no subject
Uhhuh. [ Not even pretending he bought that. ] You can tell me 'no, I don't want to talk about it' if that's how you feel, but I'm not buying that.

Re: Ashton
It wasn't easy to get all that worked out. And she was surprised to see Ashton there, her eyes widening, and lips parting before her expression shifted, to that of determination.
Ashton, she's coming over. She wants a hug.
Re: Ashton
...and then go right back to looking at the Ledger.
Re: Ashton
Sokie sighed, troubled, before burying her face against Ashton's neck and giving them a nibble.

i think thisll be short but i want it to be canon anyway
Marc double-takes, if Ashton is human-looking.
He knows why he's in here (slinking inside to avoid a confrontation because he's allergic to emotions) but why are YOU here?
"... Alright.
I won't ask if you don't."
hell yeah. follow your heart
- soaking wet
- shirtless
- eighty-five percent still in the water, arms folded on the shore beyond it and head pillowed on their arms
- somehow not pruny at all despite any of the above points?? flawless skin?? unfair vampire bullshit
just stares at him with the unfocused, annoyed look of someone who wants to be nosy but absolutely does not have the energy for it, and who was also dissociating for a large chunk of the last two hours.
"...if she let you in here, it's fine."
Lady Ashe
Re: Lady Ashe
A party guest who's simply had a little too much to drink, surely. The man does stir as she walks inside.
Re: Lady Ashe
It's remarkably subtle! But it's there. And she's aware of Lord Armand's intermittent tendency towards... keeping men he has some interest in. At least when she keeps pets they're not meant for inevitable slaughter, and she lets hers roam, like that little pickpocket. (Who is not necessarily hers, but -- details, details.) It's hardly a tendency unique to him, which makes it simply one of the many loathsome things about the greater vampire population.
She takes a second to unbutton one glove, retrieve her hand, and score a sharp nail through the glyph hidden on the threshold before she properly enters the room. That should earn her a few minutes.
Gloves back on, she makes her way to him with delicate steps, lifting up his chin with one gentle hand. He does have quite a pretty face, and such unique hair, too - perhaps he's one of that new band of foreign travelers? They seem to be from all over.
Re: Lady Ashe
Oh... This is... not a servant. The servants have barely even looked at Gojyo when delivering meals.
"Feels like it's been ages since a woman cozied up to me in bed", he mutters.

Looking for the hostess. Don't mind him.
Seriously, don't mind him. Seriously, everyone else stop talking to him. Shut up. Shut up. He does not like any of you and he's not good at pretending he does. Go away.
Things that are not helping him: resting bitch face, no fucking idea how to act Victorian, looks like he COULD be Sardinian, which is of course very gauche. Human.
Things that ARE helping: Some CIA undercover training, really good jawline, looks like he COULD be Persian, which is of course very fashionable. Already marked as claimed by something that most guests would consider too big to start a fight with.

Or expected ones. Sometimes her guest lists are a tad questionable! She finds it deeply amusing when two people lose their composure and get into a public confrontation, or even if they just snipe at each other all night. It's the little things in unlife.
At the moment, the lady of the hour is: overseeing an eager discussion about some of the latest magiscientific discoveries, a politely indulgent smile on her face as she referees to make sure nobody gets too excited and forgets themselves. Ashe Harwood died older than Ash Carver, is appropriately attired in evening dress for a lady of the era, and her voice is higher - more lilting, less clear and sharp - but she's recognizable enough.
She knows they have a very bold intruder tonight! (One of her servants has already alerted her.) This might be exciting. Usually that type is out for her head, though whether it's for doing necromancy as an undead creature herself, being a vampire, or any of the other morally unfortunate things she does is always a toss-up.

Marc glances up, keeps a poker face really well because it really takes a strong emotion for his expression to ever be anything except a glower.
"Look," he says, to one of the help, getting them by the elbow. "can you just tell her-...

Adamantea / Poppy / the lady of gardens
wildcard for Ashton; in Scrimshore
Oops. Hopefully no one saw that.
Re: wildcard for Ashton; in Scrimshore
Shaw does not look like she's having a particularly good time. Ashton? Ashton looks like they're at a themepark they're an experienced veteran of: having a good time, but not in an out-of-control or wildly-excited sort of way. They look remarkably at ease, which is very egregious when taking into account all the fucking birds, a non-negligible amount of which are aggressive.
no subject
"Do you need help getting out?" she asks skeptically, already pretty sure of the answer.
no subject
"Me? I'm dead, certainly, but I'm not that sort of dead. No help needed on that front."
Their graduation was never publicly announced anywhere... but their name's been on that posted list of wardens for the last month, they've been in more warden-item-locked spaces than usual, and John does very much have a new inmate at the moment, so in theory she could well not know about it. They wouldn't want to assume.
(They wouldn't have been here anyways, they don't think, if they had still been an inmate and been dragged dead into the Nethermere like the rest. Though if that had been the case, they'd like to think they'd make for an interesting bird. Maybe some sort of raptor.)
