Chapter 15: Verses 2-12 [closed]
« Who: Vincent, Arthur, and Oscar
« What: someone is avoiding everyone, including all cats
« When: mid February
« Where: library, Oscar's cabin
« Content Warnings: nothing in particular; please note that Vincent will not be around for the span of the Cat Plot including meal times and his work in the chapel
Vincent does not have any magical talents. He isn't gifted, wasn't chosen, and was never given the one thing he ever wanted that would have let him change things (in his estimation) before he died. What he does have is knowledge, one particular type, which serves him well for the time being.
Avoiding everyone and everything. Including cats. And people.
He has, in fact, holed up in a spot in the library, the room itself shifted slightly out of phase with the rest of the area to ensure his privacy; other people can use it as well without noticing him or his things and he can continue about his business, slip out every so often to refill his water bottle and use the restroom, and then return to the room to fill his head with numbers so it isn't filled with anything else.
Once the cats are gone-
Once the cats are gone, he thinks he ought to be able to handle it all.

A calligraphy workbook, an inkwell, a penknife. There's a single, familiar white and black tailfeather serving as a bookmark, on the first page of control exercises, already fitted with a nib.

But he was observant. He was good at research, and finding things- and people.
He still needed his rosary to find Vincent, and he wasn't even sure if he had the right location. He did make sure there were no cats around though as he quietly called out.
"I pray to our heavenly father, son, and holy ghost that what is lost can be found."
He crossed himself, lowering his rosary. "That is, if they wish to be found to be moved somewhere far more comfortable. Amen."

Though he does close his eyes and focus briefly, seeing if he can't see if Vincent is audible anywhere nearby too.

Unsurprisingly, he's actually rather good at it.
"I'm sorry I didn't think to leave a note. I wasn't in the mood to-" He scrubs at his face.
"I forgot my communicator, didn't I? Shit."
no subject
He looked rough himself, but he at least cleaned up before the search.
"You did. Thank you for revealing yourself." He didn't have to, but also likely suspected that neither would dump him onto the Cat King's lap, or Hanna's. "Do you remember where you left it? Or should we leave it?"

"I'n not hiding from either of you, I just-" and he breathes in deep and breathes out slow. "I don't have it in me to deal with... it. Everything. The fucking-"
He lets out a sigh.
"It's just in my cabin. I put it down on the bed while I was packing up, I suppose."
no subject
Oscar nodded, glancing to Arthur, before glancing back to Vincent.
"I'm glad you're physically all right, Vincent. But it is...a mess out there."
he cleared his throat. "I only have one person on my filters, and that is his," He gestured to Arthur, "partner. However, I can take him off for the duration of this...particular time. Though I'd warn him it was temporary."
He wasn't going to be a dick to the god he adored.

Then he shakes his head.
"No, leave it there, please," because not having it on him means that he doesn't have to look at messages he isn't answering. He'll be better able to deal with those, even a few of them piled up, when he isn't like... this.
He looks to Oscar.
"What has he said, exactly?"
The tone isn't suspicious; he trusts Arthur as much as he trusts anyone, really. But he wants to know how much Oscar is aware of, how many pieces he's put together.
no subject
"He made sure to alert me that you gave him permission to tell me, for one." Because that was the most important part. "But Arthur told me that before the pairing with the now graduated Cat King, he killed your partner, Hanna. And that you worked with Sokie to create a...magical box that separated the Cat King's soul into pieces. And it seems...with the sheer amount of cats on board...that the Cat King has brought his court on board- or just a lot of cats- for who knows what. But if not as part of an Admiral's request, which is unlikely considering what we had to do to help that one poor town, then...Hanna likely gave the Cat King his deal."
He paused. "And am I right for assuming that the Cat King, nor anyone close to him, has sought revenge or retribution?"
no subject
"I am well aware that Arthur wouldn't tell you anything I wouldn't approve of. We see eye to eye on most things," he says with a soft huff, a noise lacking the usual humor to be called a laugh.
"And the Cat King hardly needed to. He had access to Hanna, the most visible lever for me on board."
He'd made certain of that.
"I'm not worried about my safety, Oscar."
no subject
His tone was quiet. Curious. Since, well, it did not seem for safety but for something else. But he wanted to hear it confirmed before saying another word, or assuming.
no subject
"As the Cat King has graduated, Hanna has decided in his infinite wisdom to award his deal to the Cat King, allowing him the means to travel between dimensions, apparently. Including to his world in case the Cat King should, in Hanna's words, 'ever need him'."
There's a glance to Arthur, whom he knows for certain knows his eventual 'plans'. Or what were his plans. And then smiles at Oscar.
"He did not, of course, ask me whether I needed anything since, of course, I as an ungraduated inmate could hardly need anything of any importance. And he seemed inclined to think I would be very happy that I would 'probably' never see the Cat King again."
He entwines his fingers.
"I was, of course, so elated by this news that I felt the need to hole up in this remote room away from my communicator and every other living being since in my rapturous joy, I might accidentally step on a small, completely innocent creature who does not deserve to in any way be harmed by my... great and bounding giddiness."
He swallows, then grabs for a water bottle.
"So you see, my warden, Arthur, I will, in fact, be just fine. As soon as all the cats are gone and I can... properly express my intense... feelings over this momentous occasion."
no subject
Arthur cannot express profoundly enough how completely disappointed he is in Hanna in this moment. He'll definitely have to make sure Sheehan's aware, in case that ends up coming up sooner than later.
"In that case I recommend telling Hanna at your nearest convenience," he says coolly. "He's certainly had enough opportunities to prove he'll take your opinion into consideration and consistently failed to follow through."
no subject
All in a careless act of...what was it, love? Generosity? Didn't the man even realize how close Vincent was to graduating? Heaven above, he was the one who knew Vincent the least and he could see it.
"I certainly can't speak to him right now. If I saw him, I would punch the man in the face, and possibly keep going." He breathed out a slow, hot sigh, reciting some things in his head to help him calm down.
"I can't believe someone would be so..." Another breath. "Careless, with you. My friend."
no subject
"Apparently, he has not actually considered applying the concept of triage to... anything. Who knew."
He lets his hands rest on the table, and looks down at the book he's been working on. There's a moment where it distracts him, where his fingers play with the pen before he swallows and nods. Then he looks to Oscar.
"My god is with me," he says, much more quietly than before, "and with him, I may weather any maelstrom. He is my rock."
He breathes in and closes the book.
"I suppose you'd like me to vacate the study room, at least?"
no subject
He doesn't look at Oscar.
no subject
Or the God that he still followed. Or His Purpose.
"And I am glad that he is with you, and loves you well." He pressed a hand to his chest, over his heart. He meant it, even if he was still not happy about Kahl sneaking into his dreams.
"But what we would like doesn't matter. What you want is." He dropped his hand. "You're safe, you have supplies, and you've ensured you cannot be found by normal means. If you would like to go somewhere else, that is up to you."
He glanced at Arthur. "If I have to fight you for that Arthur, I will."
no subject
And looks to Arthur.
"Yes, my chosen god who also chose me. Apparently, I am Saint Vincent, first priest of Kahl, if you can believe such grandeur of your humble compatriot in inmate rights administration," comes with a wry smile. But then he looks to Oscar. "But I'm hardly married to this room. You said you had a space in your cabin, Father?"
no subject
So he stuck with just answering the question.
"Yes, I do." He kept it at that. Vincent could see how nice everything was in the spare bedroom when he came over. He'd already seen the kitchen and living room spaces.
no subject
"I've born witness to the lengths Oscar will go to in order to protect someone. I can't imagine you with a more dedicated party." His hands shift to his pockets. "Though perhaps your god might need reminding that other people are allowed to be protective of you, before he goes invading any more dreams about it."
no subject
"I doubt he will take my feedback on that particular matter," he says breezily. Then he looks down at the book.
"Give me a few moments to collect my things. I... should be able to let us all walk to your cabin without encountering anyone." Wry. "One of those lovely tricks I learned over the years."
no subject
"Of course." He started, and blinked, glancing to Arthur, before glancing to Vincent. "That's a very useful trick."
Arthur could use a trick like that back home, maybe.
