Who: Jedao, Edwin, Hakkai, Shen Wei, and Zhao Yunlan
Where:ZYL's cabin
When: now
Warnings: n/a
When everyone is awake and they've had a little breathing room since the flood, Jedao picks a date and tells everyone - including the person making it - rather peremptorily when they will be having a Family Dinner. Fortunately, Shen Wei is delighted to make a vegetarian spread, tailored to Jedao's approximate guesses regarding Edwin's tastes.

[Inviting the Guest of Honor! For Edwin]
"I was wondering, how well do you know Zhao Yunlan and Shen Wei?"

Edwin looks up as Jedao says his name and his expression lights, and then goes slightly perplexed. "Not... very? Zhao Yunlan... scared me when I was an inmate, still, but we talked and that helped. Shen Wei not much at all."
no subject
He knows Edwin doesn't know that, it's just phrase.
"They called each other cousins, for...I don't know why, but they did. So they're kind of my uncles? And Shen Wei wants to make dinner for you, now that you can really eat food. Family dinner."

The last part takes him completely by surprise. "Family dinner? Really? For me?"
no subject
It had been really cute, actually.

"Is this what birthdays feel like?"

He resettles the bucket of crab apples, wide-eyed and nervous with excitement.

Due to hetero-normative assumptions baked into several millennia of Chinese marriage, it's actually father's father's younger brother's wife, but Jedao has not really parsed that he's been calling Shen Wei Auntie instead of Other Uncle.

But he's clearly fascinated more than bemused. On some things, he's turned that particular corner and stopped looking at humanity in bafflement and instead just enjoys the complications when he finds them.
Note to himself: learn Mandarin, because that's neat.

He's trying really hard. After dinner, he's even breaking out one of his remaining bottles of Japanese whisky, and offering drinks all around-- except for Shen Wei, who doesn't need to pass out, and with strict limits on the size of a drink he'll pour for Edwin.

Edwin frowns at the very carefully sized drink Zhao Yunlan pours him, giving his uncle (his uncle! he has uncles!) a narrow-eyed look.
"Shu gong, I can't get drunk. I don't have to have a little one."

"Anyway, this is the good stuff and my supply is limited, so you only get a taste until you're sure you like it," he adds, with a wink, and hands the glass over to Edwin.
An (over) well set table
When he's finished there's barely room at the table for empty plates and bowls to be filled, and that's even with the desserts set aside on the kitchen bar. There are sweet, savory and spicy steamed buns, glass noodles with winter vegetables and tofu, rice noodles with crispy peppers and mushrooms, braised bamboo shoots, stir-fried eggplant and peppers, cold pickled carrots, mushroom and cabbage shumai, hot and sour soup, and sauces for almost everything, from rich and deep to light and spicy and everything in between. And for dessert glutinous rice balls with black sesame, sticky rice cakes with red bean paste, Rags' old favorite almond cookies, and a wide assortment of fresh fruit. Mixed in with it all are dishes with xiao Jedao specifically in mind--unflavored crispy rice cakes and, very non-traditionally, meringues, steamed egg whites, a smooth cucumber sorbet shot through with intentionally crunch bits of ice that's so mild as to be almost tasteless. And of course the mildest jasmine tea in his cabinet, alongside a deep, rich pu erh for those who want a stronger flavor.
He's happy to explain each of the dishes and sauces if asked, quick to drop particularly appetizing morsels on xiao Edwin and Cho Hakkai's plates, as he asks gentle, leading questions to encourage them, especially xiao Edwin, to talk about themselves and their interests. It couldn't be more clear that he's delighted to have all of them there.

After a moment, carefully, he picks up the dumpling and takes a bite.
