Can't Make Me a Man

Who: Peter etc
Where: Various
When: After the dreams, through the beginning of May
What: An asshole investigates how to act like he's not an asshole.

Being his own self in various people's dreams has renewed Peter's detestation for this shape he's wearing. He doesn't see at all how it's supposed to be any image of 'what he really is.' If he was a two-faced dream monster, he'd love looking like this. But he doesn't. He hates it more than he thinks he's ever hated anything in his whole entire life.

So he has to convince a warden that he's learned something, that he's going to be a good boy now.

Could his life get any worse?

After the dreams abate and life goes back to being awful, Peter retreats back into his cabin/tree for a few days. Better to let the people whose dreams he visited not see again him like this, at last for now. So even when he comes out, he avoids Pyotr, the doctor Hilbert, avoids Hunter and the witch. Most of those, at least, he can avoid by not going to the gardens or to the hospital. But he still wants to spend time around other people. He goes to the library, and makes up games using the books as building blocks. He goes to the dining hall, and actually eats real food, copying the manners he sees other people using. He watches the people who clean work, and only sometimes helps by dropping leaves and sand for them to clean up.

And he would like to avoid the girl, but there's a problem with that.

"Do you really think that's going to help?"

Speak of the witch and he appears, or rather try avoiding him that is. He's no longer the half-starved boy but back in the white robes, silvery long hair pulled into a simple braid and chewing on an apple. He also wasn't stopping at eating just the flesh, instead taking neat bites from even the core.

"Mimicking humans?"

Unfortunately for Peter, the surefire way to run into someone is to try and avoid them to begin with.

Hilbert spots Peter out of the corner of his eye when he's returning a few books (just some light reading of objectively ridiculous medical texts). He slips into the stacks for ten or so minutes, looking for something. When he finds it, he returns to Peter and places the book on the table in front of him. It's a children's book, written in very easy to read sentences, explaining what happens when someone gets cancer—obviously the sort of book designed to give a child with an infirm parent.

"Here. Read this. Text is simple not because you are child, but because I suspect you have never encountered concepts shown in my dream."

"Do you mind if I sit here?" Allen asks, as polite as always.

She catches up to him in the library. It feels appropriate. She watched for a little bit, outside of the dining hall, to track him eating like an animatronic fighting its programming.

She closes the compass app on her phone that points her in his direction and clear her throat loudly. "Hey. We gotta talk eventually, Peter."
