50 | So This Is The World

Who: Misty, you
What: Returning from her field trip, freshly mostly-reassured the barge is real, to a little fall of snow
When: December 9th, and presumably something of a catch-all for the first half of the month
Where: All over, babey
Warnings: Potential risk for standard Misty tws - reference to borderline dissociative stuff, hell stuff, suicide(/al ideation) - but just as likely nothing

It's been a very busy trip. Unexciting as it is, once she reappears in her cabin she simply collapses onto the nearest couch and sleeps. Difficult without ambient dog breathing - Ambrose has been left with Randel and co - but she manages. Upon waking she inspects her cabin and spies a file, which seems more important than a meal, and the better part of the day is spent on that. There is no outgoing message via communicator to announce her arrival, no visitation, not one step taken past the threshold into the hallway beyond her cabin. So preoccupied with reexamining her things, trying to get her bearings, she puts off checking the network until it's entirely forgotten.

So when she finally emerges, the snow (and mistletoe) are quite a surprise.

The illusion takes hold quickly; the first people she passes silently in the hall likely aren't even aware of it, something she files away as conservation of social energies or reluctance to tempt the mistletoe. Two hours later she's shoving a fresh bout of paranoia behind her and has more or less pieced the goings-on together. After some consideration she decides it's not half bad. It will end when it ends, and until then there's something peaceful about being an unseen observer.

It isn't quite 'watch your own funeral', she figures. It isn't especially focused on herself. More...nature documentary. There's nothing to look for, but reason enough to expect she won't have the opportunity again anytime soon. The entirety of one invisible afternoon is spent seated on the deck railing contributing even further to the snowfall, face turned skyward, on the verge of tears. While greater pleasure is taken in acting the part of ghost, on a lively hour one may benefit from helpful (a door opened, something precarious steadied, a radio adjusted to something objectively superior) or unhelpful (windows opened to allow in harsh drafts and further snow, objects rearranging themselves or in rare potential cases breaking entirely) ghosting.

And then it's back to business. Mistletoe trappings, visits, announcements. To say her spirits are high might be too optimistic, but she moves with more focus than has been typical as of late. Something solid behind her eyes. The snow receives transparent wonder when she isn't trying to safeguard the greenhouse from it - snowflakes are caught on tongue, the rogue snowball may be thrown if you're on appropriately friendly terms, a few extra laps are made of the ship per day in less warm clothing than might be recommended. Whatever gifts she hadn't already sorted need tending.

It's a fine time. She feels...fine.

People are disappearing. He can't keep watch over them if they're disappearing. And then he finds Yugi passed out and unresponsive, but otherwise healthy, and he's reminded of the Barge coma phenomenon-- and suddenly it's even more important that he make sure everyone is okay.

He has no idea if Misty's back yet, but his imagination is surprisingly vivid for a murder machine, and it keeps painting pictures of her collapsed in his cabin and he has to check on her. He has to. So he crouches in front of her door, prepared to pick whatever lock is there, only to find... no lock. The door barely has a latch and it creaks open when he touches it.

Invisible Misty, whether inside or outside, will be treated to a moment of a crouched and startled B, staring in consternation at the frankly terrible opsec in Misty's room. What the hell, Misty.

He has a trained ear... but he's also not familiar with her ramshackle house and its natural settling creaks. So he can't be sure. (If this were anywhere but the Barge, he could hear her heartbeat, but everything is so curiously muffled here.)

He straightens up slowly and steps inside, looking around, making a slow circuit of the shack. Checking the corners and under what furniture pieces are there. Then he... slumps a little against the wall by the door, some mingled relief and disappointment. Not here. She must not be back yet. (Or else she's disappeared, too. Again.) But she's not in hurt or dying in here, and not in a coma.

No, Misty, it's literally just to check. He has neuroses, okay.

The door makes him jump, instantly alert and fully upright again, looking around. There was no breeze. The snow is piled outside, but not in here, and anyway the door opens the wrong way for falling snow to knock it closed. Is there something that causes the door to close on its own after a specified period of time...? He prowls to the door to investigate, not opening it again yet, but definitely giving it a once over.

He doesn't immediately jump to magic, because one, he doesn't know Misty has it, and two, he still doesn't remotely understand what magic can do aside from turn you into someone else, apparently. And make people want to kiss you.

He doesn't see anything... and he doesn't feel anything when he passes his hand over the door. He opens it again and peers outside, but there's no one passing close enough to have pulled it shut themselves.

He doesn't mutter to himself, because he's too used to having to be silent unless there's a person to report to, but he definitely thinks, Weird.

Then, looking between the room and the hall, he pauses to go to... go to the table, a flat surface. He pulls a small sheet of paper out from where he keeps a couple tucked into Becca's book and starts folding up another crane, a very small one. It's Misty's shape in his brain, now, and there's a small, irrational part of said brain that says maybe if he leaves her one she'll know it's safe to come back. She said this is her home now, after all. She should be here.

He sets the finished crane on her pillow, gently, then gives her blankets a little pat. Come back soon, Misty.

And unless she gives him some more concrete sign that she's actually here, he'll leave it at that and start out of the room again.

Those are great. And, in fact, perfect. He needs to learn how to make those.

Also, the appearance means Misty is back, so once he has these paper pups tucked away where Vesta can't eat them-- one of the red ones added to Becca's book, in place of the dog-ear to act as a bookmark-- he hurries to her cabin to see if she's there.

Jasper, who has a tenuous grasp on the passage of days at the best of time, hasn't particularly noticed Misty's absence. So she isn't anything more than annoyed when she - eight feet of invisible woman built like a refrigerator - inevitably runs flat into the equally invisible human woman.

At least this time it's completely unintentional, even if it'll be a bit like bouncing off a brick wall for Misty.

"Watch where you're going!" To whoever it is.

Jasper weighs enough that the effort is a bit more than it'd take to yank the rug out form under most people, and she shouts as she stumbles back. But she regains balance quickly, scowling invisibly at her surroundings to try to locate her tormenter.

"You'll regret that-" And she does have reach. She swings, at approximate average Barge denizen height, seeing if anything's close enough to hit.

She slams her arm into a wall, hard enough to leave a dent, and snarls in frustration, making a superhumanly fast grab towards the closest rattling door.

She'd probably have a better chance if she calmed down and worked through this with a disciplined Gem soldier's eye, but she's not feeling especially disciplined at the moment.

William doesn't set out to ruin Arthur's day.

He turns up early for breakfast, the dining hall chilly but not snowbound. Everyone slightly bulkier in the cold. He fixes himself an invisible coffee and perches unsanitarily on the counter top, close to the warmth and waft of cafeteria food.

When Arthur saunters in, William watches him get his breakfast, then slides from the counter. Trails at a safe distance as Arthur finds a seat all by himself. William sits across from him, silent save for his breathing and the occasional sip of coffee. Their feet close but never touching. He lets Arthur spread his napkin in his lap, season his food to his liking, settle into whatever routine he has.

He waits for the first bite, waits until it's almost to Arthur's lips and his mouth is watering, then deftly and almost noiselessly intercepts the other man's fork or whatever it is he may be attempting to eat by hand. There may be a brush of fingers, a quick sense of pressure, but it's over quickly. No fork or food in sight.

It has been a dangerous few days. Arthur's gone invisible himself, a few times, and this was mostly during work - invisible mops, invisible cleaning crew, invisible wet-floor signs.

It's been annoying, but he's reasonably well-liked. Apparently he had to wait until this moment to encounter someone with the motive and means to annoy the hell out of him. Because he can be a little old-fashioned, but he's not stupid. The moment his fork disappears he grunts in annoyance and looks around, hoping to land squarely on his poltergeist at least once.

"Real funny."

Sometimes people fuck with those they like, Arthur.

(But not in this case.)

William smiles to himself (who else is he gonna smile to?) when Arthur blunders into eye contact, leans slowly in until they're practically nose to nose. Then he sits back; eats the scrambled eggs off his ill-gotten fork and follows it up with a sip of coffee. He takes another sip, slurping just a little, and tosses the fork to the floor, where—visible now—it lands with a tinkle.

While Arthur turns away, his butter knife vanishes onto William's person. William takes off his hat and sets it—more or less accurately, though there may be some noise, a displaced slice of toast—over Arthur's plate. Keeping his fingers on the brim so it remains invisible. When Arthur next goes to eat, he'll see a plate of food but, a foot or so in the air, his utensils will meet with cloth.

This is followed by another sip of coffee.

And that is followed by Arthur no longer trying. Someone is fucking with him, and in the absence of a) being able to stab them b) being able to figure this out, he can just remove himself from a situation that's only fun for one half of the equation.

He gets up, rests his hands flat on the table, and grunts: "I'm assuming you aren't doing this for my amusement, in which case, fuck you, and I'm leavin'."

William makes no move to stop him: an anticlimactic conclusion to a good time that had hardly begun. As far as he is concerned, Arthur can be mildly inconvenienced and come back to the dining hall in thirty minutes. Maybe go fuck himself in between. He's not going to dedicate his morning to depriving him of sustenance.

William, meanwhile, has a plate of warm food in front of him.

He's returning his hat—still covering Arthur's breakfast like a gourmet restaurant's domed lid—to his head, thinking about how it'll smell like eggs for the rest of the day, when the smack comes. It's a solid blow that snaps his head forward and his teeth together, sloshes coffee from his mug. His grip on the hat tightens; settling it on his head he swings around on the dining-hall bench.

"Real funny," he says, laying the drawl on. There's a smile in his voice, some early-morning gravel.

He watches a moment or two, focused on the floor. Looking for the dirty water liable to pool at the feet of anyone who's recently trekked through snow.

He really isn't sure what's happening, here - he knows now that this is William, of course it's William, but some coffee drips onto the table all of a sudden, and there was the sound of some kind of impact.

He looks around as well, and spots some of that dripping water. "Will you people man up and talk already?"
