And when I wander away to some other place, I'm suddenly there
Who: Steve and Yara, Steve and you?
Where: Wherever the heck Bill goes for several days, then likely on the Barge for the last day or two of the event
When: Toward the middle-end of Begin With a Spin
Warnings: Violence, swearing, possibly mentions of killing others and/or oneself
From the moment Bill leaves the ship, Steve is with him. He spends some time trying to keep panicking civilians corralled and under control, but most of his attention is on sticking with Bill and his immediate party. Anyone trying to take down Bill - especially wardens - will find themselves facing Steve as a major line of defense. He has his reasons, and even once it's clear that what Bill - and Steve - are looking for isn't here, he's still got reasons for being where he is.
He hasn't been sleeping much - thanks, serum - and he's made a couple of raids in chaotic or abandoned grocery stores and drugstores to keep himself fed and supplied, but otherwise he's often patrolling the areas near where Bill might be found, wearing civvies and a backpack but carrying the shield.

It may be that there's something else going on that she can't see, but she needs to first bring Steve to heel before she can begin to decipher just what in the hell he thinks he's doing.
It's no use contacting the Admiral to take away his powers, that much she knows. And she has no doubt that if it came to a one-on-one contest of strength, he could easily overpower her. But she doesn't give up trying to find him. Oftentimes she does it without thinking - Barge magic being what it is and all - and only catches a glimpse or two before winking out of existence again.
By the end of it all, she knows she has to knock him out as quick as she can.
She appears without warning in front of Steve, stone-faced and deadly, a dagger in her hand as it sweeps at him.
The dagger is poisoned with the essence of sweetsleep, a concoction from her own world. It's rare when Yara feels it necessary to wound rather than kill an enemy, but it's important to her that Steve is drugged. She hates the idea of using poison - a woman's weapon, her father mocks from the grave - but for Steve, Yara will make an exception.

Steve's had a busy few days; the schedule and the breaches in reality are starting to wear on him just a little, so he does not, admittedly, expect Yara to just appear in front of him like that. Fortunately(?), instinct kicks in and he twist-jumps out of the way when he sees the dagger - though not quite fast enough. His street clothes do nothing to protect him from the blade that cuts through his shirt and grazes his ribs in a long, stinging line before he manages to get a few inches out of range, but he stops there.
He blinks at her for a second more, and yeah, there are several emotions that cross over his face, from hurt to loss to anger, but then his own face goes a little stony; he doesn't know her intentions, but he does know, "I told you not to come after them. I meant it, Yara."
no subject
She keeps the poisoned dagger with her in her dominant hand, but withdraws her sword in her left one. She grazed him, but from what she's seen of the Sweetsleep, it would take some time for Steve to fall. Especially with the serum likely counteracting it.
Too much could kill a man, but Steve was stronger than most men.
She meets him with a narrowed, iron look, debating how she wants to wear him down. Poisons work quicker through the bloodstream when the heart is pounding.
"You're coming with me. In pieces or intact, it's up to you."
Yara's tone is clear; this is the last chance she's giving Steve before it's all out war between them. She hesitates out of respect for her inmate, but is preparing for a fight. It's not in him to throw down his shield and turn himself in.
no subject
She's right - it's not in him to go quietly, and it doesn't cross his mind, even as he doesn't want to fight her. He's done a lot of things he hasn't wanted to, in his life - and fought a lot of people he hasn't really wanted to fight. This is no different. It's always the same, and maybe he shouldn't have thought that it could ever change.
The thing is, it's not necessarily the potential threat of dying that gets his adrenaline up. It's the potential threat of her killing him, or Bill, or Ford, because supposedly it's not possible because of the spell, but there are things about the spell he doesn't understand, and there are people he's sure are capable of breaking it. They're probably working on it now - have been working on it since this began. He can't take that risk. It's why he's here.
"I can't let you do something you're gonna regret," he says quietly. "But I can't go with you, either."
He only has a shield and nothing else, and he's not used to fighting someone using a sword. But he figures he'll figure it out on the fly. Still, his posture stays more defensive than anything, standing his ground. He won't be the one to make the first move.
no subject
It's a simple thing - teleportation - once you get the hang of it. Yara looks at Steve, at the air just behind him, and thinks that she might like to be there instead of here out of arm's reach.
Then suddenly she's gone and behind Steve once again. She's slicing him up the back, resolute and methodical about it. This isn't a fight with words for her any longer, and the most important thing now is to slow him down, knock him out without killing him before she loses sight of Steve.
cw: bone gore? (thanks, Leitner!)
For all that Steve's imagination is good and he's not bad at creatively thinking his way out of a situation, his actual fighting style is more limited to how many ways he can throw his body or a shield at a situation. And he might not be great at talking his way out of a fight, but this time, he's determined to try.
All that means Yara completely gets the drop on him, because he's not expecting her to pull a move like that, and she's got the chance to get more than one deep cut on him before he can get out of her way. It's about then that Steve's starting to realize - let himself realize, really, because he knew she was a serious fighter, but just wanted to think maybe she'd never turn it on him - that she is going to do this. And he can't let her.
He can't let her, but... reality seems to be going weird again, he thinks, as he stumbles away from her and twists to try and get the shield between him and that knife. He definitely missteps, expecting the ground to be someplace it's not, but manages to keep his feet, even as his expression starts to go a little glassy. He's been tranquilized before - or, at least, people have tried - but he's always managed to fight it out of his system. So maybe poison wouldn't normally work on him, but between the fact that it's nothing from his world and Yara believing it will work - and Steve having no idea it's there at all - it's starting to take effect, and he's not sure what's happening.
But he's also getting desperate, and imagination is great, but he has something else at his disposal, too - something he's been practicing. He breathes in sharply through his nose, and drops his shield to reach over to his left forearm and... pull what looks like a long, sharp bone right out of the skin, with no wound or blood in sight. "Okay," he says, quietly. "If you wanna fight with knives, we'll fight with knives."
He's staggering, though, as he rushes her.

Zero, last little bit of the event, OTA
It only makes sense, really. It's what he would've done with an inmate who was out of control.
Later - possibly much later, depending on a few factors - he texts Bucky; just a short, simple message: Back on the ship. I'm fine. Are you okay?
Even though he doesn't feel very fine.
Re: Zero, last little bit of the event, OTA
She glares at him, eating part of her lunch, which is an indication that she's been here for some time, possibly to make sure he didn't die down in the cells. His wounds haven't festered but she hasn't treated them yet, wary about taking him out of Zero before she can assure herself that he can't escape.
Finally, she tells him;
"Now you can talk. And explain why you broke your oath to me."
no subject
He's quiet a moment, before he admits, quietly, "Honestly? I wasn't aware that telling you no wasn't a thing I could do without making you an enemy."
Maybe that's on him, for getting too comfortable. For forgetting she's his warden - that she was his queen. For thinking of her as an equal, when the truth is, of course she wasn't - of course she's not.
But in the same vein, he's disobeyed a lot of people with power over him, and it's never meant - to him - that he respected them any less.
no subject
"You lied to me. Put yourself in danger, left the ship when I said no. I want to know why."
no subject
Besides, "I want what Bill wants - I want answers, and the Admiral sure as hell isn't giving anyone anything. I think he was right to look, and I wanted to help him. And I knew most of the wardens wouldn't be, and we both know what killing an inmate will get you. So I went to make sure that didn't happen."
Also, "No one stays dead, even when they want to. What the hell does danger even mean, anymore?" Not that it would have mattered, but the death toll is so precious to so many, he figures he might as well invoke it on his side for once. "I was trying to stop the real danger."
no subject
"And what's the real danger, Rogers?"

There's no warden with him, and he certainly knows what it means, even if he's not sure how it could be possible. Why it's possible. But he's able to come through regardless. And he'll make his way over to Steve's cell before sitting quietly just outside of it.
no subject
It's not like there's a wealth of things to do down here; Steve's mostly just propped up on the bunk, shifting between dozing off - there's still some of Yara's poison in his system, given that he doesn't have the benefit of the serum to burn the last vestiges of it off or heal his wounds in here - and trying to catch up on the network.
When Ardyn comes in, he's at the latter, though looking like he's heavily considering the former. It maybe takes a few seconds for the situation to click - but it does, when Steve realizes Ardyn is alone. For another second, he thinks maybe it's just the lucky graduate's first shift in Zero, but even if it is, there's also the fact that he comes right over to Steve, who eyes him tiredly for a minute. "D'you need something?"
no subject
"I believe we're in need of a talk."
no subject
It's maybe even a little more mild than Steve's expecting, at this point - but he hasn't really had much to do with Ardyn for a while, and certainly not after what happened to Yara. Of course, whether she wants to forgive the man is her business... but whether he wants to or not is Steve's, by the same token.
Still; he blows out a breath. "Are we? About what?"
He knows - or can at least infer - but either he's just being difficult, or trying not to make assumptions. It might be hard to tell. Maybe he isn't sure, himself.
no subject
He looks up from under the brim of his hat, amber eyes curious. Waiting. Watching.
"You've little to gain with games. I hardly think there is anyone here who understands as I might."

Re: Zero, last little bit of the event, OTA
[ Because Bucky kind of assumes he's busy. Otherwise, Steve would just walk through the cabin door. ]
Re: Zero, last little bit of the event, OTA
[Ugh, why did Bucky have to ask that question right away? (And honestly, is Steve really surprised that he did? It's a normal question to ask.)
Even so, the next reply takes probably far longer than it should to ping Bucky's device.] Zero.
[He wants to type a million other things, from You don't have to come down here or anything to Yara just wanted me to stay in once place for a while, is all, but all of them seem useless and even more incriminating, in the end. Half of what he'd type would be a lie, anyway, so he just doesn't - well. Except one thing, that is absolutely, positively not a lie:] Sorry.
no subject
Thankfully, it takes less time now to get anywhere on the ship, so he's silhouetted inside the doorway to Zero probably sooner than Steve wants. Too bad. He hesitates there, looking at the cells, and relief washes across his face the moment he spots Steve. It probably goes without saying that he's making his way down the walkway almost instantly, but that is what happens.
And then he's crouching in front of the cell, emotions flashing too quickly through his eyes to be easily named. ]
You okay?
no subject
[Steve is hunched over on the floor with his back to the bed frame, mostly because it's the only way he can lean back and put as little pressure as possible on the knife slashes up his back. Being in Zero means he heals at the regular rate, which is pretty much not at all except for the way any cuts have at least scabbed over. His front looks better than his back, with only the one thin cut, which is why he's suddenly very glad he's facing the walkway when Bucky appears; Steve glances up from his device, almost a little startled, like he'd been staring at the thing waiting for Bucky to reply there instead of just showing up.
Again... he's not really surprised.] Yeah, [he says, which is both a lie and the truth, because he'll manage all right but he feels like shit, and to be honest, most of it is more mental than physical. Cuts and scrapes, bumps and bruises, those are normal. Everything else... well, it's becoming normal, too, but he still doesn't like it.]
Things okay here, now? [If he just makes small talk about the Barge, maybe Bucky will take his answer at face value. Right?] You're okay?

Re: Zero, last little bit of the event, OTA
She stands outside the cell with her lips pressed into a line, studying him, quiet as she attempts to carefully construct her opening statement.
It vanishes as the curiosity gets the better of her, and the frayed, frantic edge in her voice nudges away the illusion that she's perfectly composed, and the question she asks is simple but fraught with worry. "What happened?"
no subject
He isn't sure what she's going to say, but he can't really imagine it'll be very good - so he does his best to wait for it, and when it comes out - Well, It's better than it could be. It's at least just an honest question.
"Yara told me to come back, and I said no. So she came and got me," is really the simplest way to put it. He's still feeling groggy and nothing has really healed at all, but he figures it'll set itself right when he leaves. He thinks. Unless she's asked to take away the serum again; he wouldn't be surprised.
But that's for later; now, he's squinting at Laura, because, "Are you all right?"
no subject
"I'm fine," she replies almost immediately, as a reflex.
She's not fine.
But she's not tied up in a cell in Zero, so relatively speaking -- that's fine.
Her brows draw together, and she turns her eyes more to the floor than to Steve. "I should have been with you."
no subject
Regardless, he shakes his head, shifting a little on the bed, slowly. "No. I'm not your responsibility, and - " He hadn't really wanted to hurt Yara. His heart hadn't been in it, and Laura's might have. He doesn't want that for her or for Yara. "I know I lost track of you. And I'm sorry for that."
