Who: Rosethorn/Nivalin and OPEN
What: Welcome to the New Age flood
Where: Various
When: Last couple days of the flood (adult Rosethorn available for earlier backtagging)
Warnings: Child abuse and exploitation (non-sexual), corporeal punishment
If Rosethorn were an optimistic soul, she may let herself believe that this flood has passed her by. After all, they typically last about a week, and she's spent most of that firmly unaffected, and glad for it. Someone has to keep an eye on all the children and play backup for the infirmary, after all.
But what happens the last couple days is exactly why she rather considers herself, if not a full-on pessimist, a realist.
Nivalin's been on the Barge before, but though it may remember her, she has no recollection of it. All she knows is that one moment she was trying to sleep on her hard, small bed despite the uncomfortable chains, and the next she's in a strange place, lined with more glass than she's ever seen in one place. It's filled with so much green life that it takes her breath away, sending her reeling from its sudden presence under her skin, its sheer vibrance. Branches and stems reach for her haphazardly, half trying to bolster her up and half knocking her over in their eagerness.
She laughs, a tight and surprised sound, but one she hasn't heard in a while. It's entirely impossible, this place, but it's more real of a dream than she's ever felt before.
Maybe she's dead. The thought makes her furious, but at least it would serve Da right.
[Later]
Nivalin isn't happy to learn that she and the plants aren't alone here, because she certainly can't trust any of the adults. But she does need food, even if she's not eager to seek out companionship. And fruit isn't enough to really fill her belly, though the dear plants do try for her.
So between huddling in the densest part of the greenhouse and spying on passer-bys, she creeps into the dining hall to fill her pockets with meat, cheese, and bread. Anything that she can get without too much notice. And she looks like she needs it, too - she doesn't appear starving, but she's still thin, and pale, and dirt-smeared after only a short time in the greenhouse. The marks from her most recent whipping at her father's hand are, at least, hidden by her simple, old-fashioned dress.

The girl, the way the greenery seems to be responding to her - those things don't fit with her other observations, which just means something new to learn about. The girl herself, on the other hand, is far more familiar looking. Thin, pale, old-fashioned clothes, and even the look in her eyes - Hope remembers back when the world had been a little more alive, when their travels had taken them to settlements of those who still survived... This girl could have stepped out of one of almost any of them. Except for the plants, that's certainly different.
"They like you."

"Of course they like me. Why wouldn't they?"
no subject
She shrugs.
"Haven't seen them do that for anyone else."
no subject
"So? They've always been my friends. What of it?"
no subject
"We didn't have any plants, really, last place I was but they seem like good friends to have. Is it your power? I don't have mine yet." It might not be the safest thing to admit to, maybe better to have that as a potential threat, but talking to another girl around her age, one she assumes to be another mutant, she's not thinking purely tactically.

"I don't know what it is." It's too much, at this point, for her to believe she's just naturally talented with green growing things, though that was what she believed for a while when she was younger. "Probably magic." Because what else could it be?
no subject
"You're not a mutant?"

later!
[A bright, floating triangle appears when she enters the dining hall, apparently very agitated.]
THERE'S SO MANY OF YOU. THERE'S TOO MANY! STOP TURNING INTO KIDS. WHAT DO KIDS EAT? LEAVES? THAT CEREAL MADE OF LEPRECHAUNS? OTTER MARROW?
later!

[Bill lands on the floor with both feet and his cane.]
LOOK, I'M NOT GOING TO HURT YOU. HI. I'M BILL. LOOK AT ME, I'M TINY. WHAT AM I GONNA DO?

Not that it didn't him any good. Bill studies where his fingernails would be if he had any.
"HEYYY, GOT IT IN ONE. DREAM DEMON, CAN'T DO ANYTHING TO PEOPLE THAT ARE AWAKE. TOUGH GIG."

mobile misfire :(
Bill teleports back another ten feet.
"NOT TOUCHING YOU. NOT NEAR YOU. TAKE A COUPLE BREATHS. YEESH."

Late Forever
He watches Nivalin steal into the dining hall to rob herself a meal, and makes a point of giving her a look, encouraging her to stop what she's doing. She's been caught, though clearly he's not up to chasing after her for something as pointless as coming for a meal.

Instead, he silently asks her to join him at his table.

"What's your name?"
no subject
"Nivalin Greenhow. What do you want?"
no subject
"Information, in exchange for information." He replies, in as non-threatening a tone as he can manage.
"Is that acceptable to you? Or is there something else you want?"
