Do You Believe in Second Chances?
WHO: Mortimer Toynbee and Open. (See comment sections).
WHAT: Pretty standard first day confusion, will probably hit a few people/get hit before he settles down.
WHEN: Tuesday
WHERE: Level 7 hallway and any level above.
WARNINGS: Violence, Possible suicidal references.
The windowless hospital room looks alarmingly familiar, but the corridor outside does not. This is not how he pictured Dr. Frankenstein's place. He digs through the drawers and closets, surprised to see his few possessions laid out. And there, on the bedside table is a phone. Unlocked.
He scrolls though it. Some posts are ominous: mentions of kidnapping, Wardens and Inmates. But most of them make no sense whatsoever. The video of the man on a horse wearing a bonnet is enough to make him give up. Who knows where all these people are calling from? It would be better to just go and look. No need to take the phone, it probably had a tracking device.
He'd cover more ground in long jumps, but the first time he tries he only manages to faceplant with a loud thump. Anyone passing by level 7 will be treated to the sight of a grown man hop-stumbling and cursing quietly to himself for a few seconds before he gives up. Mort walks briskly, as if he has somewhere to go, but not too fast. As he moves up each level he tries not to look anyone in the eye without making it seem like he's looking away. Still, somehow, he comes off as uneasy, lost and out of place. He's green too, so there's that.

"Little early to be that drunk."
no subject
"M' not drunk" he mutters resentfully, though truthfully he doesn't feel well. He can't jump and that, more than anything scares him on a gut level.
"Who the hell are you?"
no subject
He says, putting his hands in the pocket of his coat.
no subject
"Toad." He finally offers his name with the maximum surly reluctance. He doesn't miss the hand in the pocket, that's part of the reason he's on edge.
no subject
This is a little unsettling. Alfie gives him a long look, hunting for the resemblance.
"We'll have to look into that."
no subject
"No."

"Aw, fuck, how the hell'd you get here?"
As if one Toad wasn't bad enough.
no subject
"Speed?"
If this is Wanda's boy, he looks exactly like young Pietro. The disappointment is what he would expect.
"You tell me, kid."
no subject
He's not so clear on how the communicator glitches work, clearly. Or how much people typically remember afterwards.
[A great deal less furious than icon]
"Oh, for fuck's sake."
It's time travel, cloning, hallucinogenic drugs, or lies and he doesn't have the patience to try to untangle it.
"I don't know who you think I am, but no. You are nowhere near Pietro's age and whatever bullshit is going on here I'd like it to stop."

Have you seen a guy with a ridiculous mustache around here?"

Aftermath

The young witch sits on the steps leading up to the deck, a book in her hands. She glances up when Toad wanders by, giving him a pleasant if slightly dazed smile. There was still some time left before she needed to tend to her dinner shift, and was killing time by catching up on her reading.
"I noticed you were looking a bit green."
no subject
Is that a joke? Somehow he doesn't think it's a cruel one. But who knows with teenagers?
"I'm a mutant. Not sick." His voice is flat. "Any other reason I should go?"
no subject
She paused, glancing down the hallway to look at the infirmary doors, speculating.
"...Well, no. Unless you like staring at the people having their death tolls."
no subject
This girl is either an accomplished actress or kind of dim, he thinks.
"Death to- nevermind." He shakes his head. "Staring at dead people ain't my thing."
no subject
She nods sagely, looking a little concerned.
"Well. All of the inmates and half the wardens are dead, but you wouldn't know it just by looking. Sorry if that idea makes you uncomfortable."
no subject
"It's really that dangerous around here? Or, maybe you're talking about Dr. Frankenstein's experiments?"

When he passes Mortimer in the hall he doesn't even do a double-take, at least not a visible one.
"Toad."
no subject
"Cyclops!?" The startled look lasts only a second.
"I...I left you a couple messages. No wonder you didn't get them if you were stuck here."
He doesn't actually think that's why Scott never returned his calls, but part of him wants to believe that.
no subject
"Left me -" He stopped, and then shook his head slightly. "I don't think we're from the same point in time. Have you see the others, yet?" Because god knew he didn't think a single one of them lined up. Heck, he knew they didn't. Closest he had come was Creed.
no subject
Everybody keeps saying time's weird. I haven't seen any of yours. Only Quicksilver and he...he was just a kid." Mort shook his head in disbelief.
"I wish whoever was screwing around with us would stop it."
no subject
Yeah, he could say more about the rest, but there's something the wishing they'd be left alone that grabs him - and hurts him. Because it's not, and he knows it. Not unless they make it stop, and that's a big old general fuck you to the whole wide world he's keeping to himself. "Good news is, this time it's not personal."
Or at least not targeted at Mutants. "Jean's around. Victor. Pietro, but yeah, he's a kid and pissed off. Also apparently lived in a boarding house without any electricity." No, he doesn't know.
