In the lowlands, nestled in the heat

Who: Beatrix Kiddo, Redeemer crew, Ronald Sandoval, Governor Narvin, Dr. Banner
Where: On a deserted island, of course
When: Day 1 of the Land Ho! breach; days 2 and 3 to come (stay tuned!)
Warnings: Potential hostage situations/kidnapping. Violence. Uh, pregnancy?

When the storm had risen Beatrix Kidd wasn't sure whether to thank God or curse His whims; the chaos afforded such ripe opportunity for escape, so easily seized by some of her fellow prisoners, and if it were not for her condition she might have found her way to freedom as well. As it was, as soon as the captain ordered the lifeboats deployed hers was the first cell unlocked. "Women and children first," the second mate had said, and at the moment she fulfilled both conditions. Her cold-blooded pirate reputation may have been well-earned, but the child she carried was an innocent British soul. Until she bore it no death sentence could be carried out, though a few less than sympathetic sailors remarked that it won't be long before she hangs.

And though hang her they might, they wouldn't allow her to come to harm yet. When the waves spilled over the sides and threatened to capsize the boat, one sailor wrapped his arms under her shoulders and held her steady against him. He meant to ensure her safety and instead gave her the opportunity to pickpocket his communicator, yet he still helped her from the sinking boat and nudged her toward land.

When the sea spat her out on the shore with all the other flotsam a sore ache resounded throughout her whole body and she fought to cough seawater from her lungs. But she was alive; the agitated stirring in her belly was reassurance her baby was alive. Fortune had smiled on her.

Or perhaps grinned as if at a particularly ironic joke. When Beatrix raised her eyes to examine her surroundings she realized she was not, in fact, alone; that some of the Redeemer crew had washed up nearby, and that her wrists were still loosely chained.

She had escaped drowning, but nothing else.

OOC: Starting with just two comment prompts. Keep your eyes peeled for more soon! But not literally peeled, although I'm sure some of the pirates will help you with that.

ONE DAY I WILL GET THINGS RIGHT

In about ten minutes the raven arrived; a black bird perched in the round hatched window of the brig. It shifted from foot to foot, more settled than a crow would be, searching the room with intelligent eyes.

It hopped to the sand and strode towards her confidently, looking up at her with one eye, and twisting to do it with the other. She was different shaped than last it saw, but it knew her well.

With a flap it lit up onto the nearest perch and started sideling towards her, giving her that look that birds tend to give that they can't help- a direct stare out of one side of its head.

The bird continued to stare at her, in that uneasy way that carrion eaters stare at someone that makes them wonder if it's contemplating eating them. Instead, though, it opened its white-tipped beak and formally announced, "I hate Mark." As if those were words it certainly heard before.

Then a moment later it was grooming her hair, as if it was trying to fix it back to something more familiar. No, no. Her feathers were supposed to lay like this.

It gave up and squawked and flapped when a guard came to shoo it, and as soon as the loud and terrible man was gone (and by "gone" the raven would say "no longer within swatting distance") he came toodling back to perch on Beatrix's knee.

Governor James Narvin was never a sailor. And in the Army where he'd made a name for himself, the enemy was usually very evident. A Frenchman, or a Spaniard, or a savage from the distant reaches of the Empire. Never a pregnant woman who spoke the mother tongue as well as any born to England's green hills. It didn't sit entirely right with him.

He had no particular authority on the ship beyond what little his station gave him. The Captain ruled the little kingdom that was the Redeemer. But no one would dare tell him that he couldn't talk to the woman or offer her small kindnesses, like an extra crust of bread or drink of water.

"Ma'am." He politely assumed she was a woman wed, although he didn't inquire about the father. "I believe in chains is the usual place for a prisoner to reside. But under your particular delicate circumstances, I shall do what I can to ease your discomfort."

adding a disposable NPC guard

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2013-05-06 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Governor Narvin had heard tales of her exploits being bandied about by the Redeemer's crew. He took them about as seriously as he took their stories about mermaids and ghost ships. There was something about being at sea that seemed to addle a man's wits until he'd believe any nonsense, even that a delicate female like their prisoner could kill ten grown men.

"Very well. I cannot deny your claims. A woman thus indisposed should hardly be capable of overcoming both the guard and myself. And should you try to run--" although she scare looked capable of that, either, certainly not quickly "--I must warn you that I am armed with a pistol and was the best shot of my regiment."

With that, he turned to the guard and demanded the keys. The guard wavered, torn between the orders of his superior officer and the orders of the Governor, but in the end the Governor was here and his superior officer wasn't, so he relented.

"I had a daughter," he explained softly as he unlocked the shackles. "Blonde just as you are."

If you'd told him he'd be diverted from his pursuit of Miss Zev Bellringer, you'd have gotten the scrunchiest scrunch face ever. First Miss Isley's forward manner in her investigation was quite unbecoming, and then there was the refusal to allow him to accompany her safely and now...

Delivering a baby on this godforsaken island.

Well, okay, he'll deal with it. He just won't like it.

ONOES!

[personal profile] lost_humanity 2013-05-07 07:15 am (UTC)(link)
Sandoval was beside of Beatrix, arm hanging down where she could clutch at it with a grip so fierce the bruise would be nasty, later. In fact his face flinched from time to time, but that pistol trained on the Governor's head certainly didn't waver, and for now his eyes didn't deviate.

He had given her a stick wrapped with a handkerchief to bite on, to muffle what were surprisingly slight noises coming out of her considering what she was going through. At least all the gore he had endured in his lifetime had prepared him to stand by through this, though he was tempted to hunt down William and have his head for being conveniently absent. Surely Beatrix wouldn't be opposed, after this.

OMG!

[personal profile] timesbureaucrat 2013-05-07 08:25 am (UTC)(link)
Governor Narvin's eyes were wide. Whether it was because of the pistol at his head or the woman giving birth in front of him, even he couldn't say. He hadn't seen his daughter's birth, shooed away by the midwife who said that the birthing room was no place for a man. He'd had no idea the process was so...wet.

He certainly wouldn't trade his place for the woman's right now, pistol at his head or not.

"Surely a babe is too large to..."

And time for a Dean rescue!

[personal profile] lost_humanity 2013-05-07 08:12 am (UTC)(link)
He knew the crew of the Redeemer would eventually come for them, and he needed to give her time to escape. With Banner seemingly responding to hostage situation, he wouldn't appear to have betrayed his crew. At least that's what he would assume. He dragged Narvin towards the area that his bird had been lingering near, gun still in his hand, ready to stall and delay while Beatrix escaped with the infant to... somewhere. If not the Rage, then somewhere.

He stood at the crest of a hill, a steep slope that led into quick flowing water. That quick flowing water would eventually drop into a shallow waterfall, and there would be plenty of time to save the Governor (as per Beatrix's wishes) as well as time for Sandoval to make a hasty retreat. He just had to wait.

Governor Narvin wanted to fight against the pirate's rough grip, but one does not fight a pistol to the skull, not if one wishes to remain living, as Narvin most certainly did. He hoped someone crossed their path soon. Crew of the Redeemer to recognize and rescue him, or even another pirate who might be susceptible to bribery and the promise of having a colonial governor in his debt.

"If you kill me they shall hunt you down to the ends of the earth." This was not strictly speaking true. Adding the murder of a governor to his list of crimes would make reward for Sandoval's capture go up, yes, but ultimately Narvin knew that as far as the Crown was concerned, he was expendable. If he died, they'd simply send another, and perhaps a few Admirals would make speeches about the scourge of piracy and use his unfortunate demise to request further funds from Parliament.

"Be quiet," Sandoval said flatly, irritated as he prodded the side of his head with the pistol to remind him it was there. "The lady wanted you alive, so you live. And with all of your digits, two. Don't drive me to decide differently. I am not well-known for my mercy"

He squinted at him. "Did you know that she was the Viper, or that I was the Raven? If not, now you do. If there is anything to renew a man's faith in Providence it's that we too Devils were brought together here again, and your one kind act has actually spared you damnation. I would reflect on that later, if I were you."

Not often did he let men walk away from him intact, very well alive. A few scrapes and bumps were far better than what else he was capable of.

Dick hadn't answered the call to arms because he would not bear arms; instead, he'd chosen to do what he did best. Come in from the side, irritating and unexpected, to prevent what harm he could-- on all sides.

He slipped from the woods, muttering prayers only to himself-- he'd been much among death today, and begged God that at least this small new life and its mother would be spared.

"Arms, sister? Not in many years." Dick raised his hands and stepped from the shadows. "I was a passenger aboard the Rage; I can see you back to that crew."

He made it back eventually, long after she did. He was doing his very best to make sure the path was secure. When he arrived at their end of the island he ran to her and knelt down in front of her quickly, rushing to take her face in his hands and plant quick kisses on her nose and forehead and mouth. It was all he could do to hug her, but there was something small and fragile in her arms and he didn't want to disrupt it.

He took her carefully, brutal hands entirely gentle as he supported her head and held her slight weight.

"She's so small..." He said with the wonder of a man not thinking that it had to be wrestled out of a woman's body, despite seeing it happen. Instead, of a man knowing that it would have to become an adult, that it would have to be raised to proper size. That his child could other spend a life at see like he did, or never know the ocean at all.

He shifted her to the crook of his arm, touching her tiny palm with what felt like an enormous fingertip.
