[The communicator is propped up on Ford's desk, in his study. There's weirdness detritus in the background -- globes, crystals, watch parts, a laptop, a miniaturized stage inside a terrarium? -- but it's hard to make out clearly in the dim light. Ford's sitting at the desk, resolutely facing the camera.
He looks tired. Ford's seen the network posts, the anger and chaos that he's caused. It's not what he meant to do. It's precisely what he'd tried to avoid, by timing what he said so it wouldn't be during a feelings-sharing flood. And on top of that, he's....well, he's got something he has to own up to.]
I don't have inmate readings.
...
What I mean is, I can't get inmate readings.
Two inmates with watches have disappeared over the last few days, and both sets of sensors came up with....nothing. Just interdimensional static, impossible to trace or analyze. I can't draw any conclusions from it at all, except that...
[A heavy, raspy sigh; a six-fingered hand drags over his face.]
...that I'm an old fool who's wasted everyone's time on nothing again. The data from this project is useless. What I got was being controlled the entire time, and I was never going to be able to do anything with it -- just like I was never going to make it to the Authority.
[Which had been another disaster, one that was his fault, that no one had made him do but he had done anyway. No one who hadn't been in on that had cared why he'd done it. They'd all just shouted at him, called him a monster. He's starting to think that they're right. That's what a monster is, isn't it? Something that, intentionally or not, because of its inhuman nature, threatens and hurts what people care about? They've all been right this whole time, but he was too determined to be the one who solved the problem to see it. To prove that a freak like him was useful and smart, and was worth anything.]
The Admiral says we haven't caused any apocalypses, by the way, for what that's worth. He says the whole thing is more nonlinear than my instruments suggested. Hange was the one who got it out of him. It would have been nice to know that before I sent the Barge into a destructive panic, but apparently, [bitterly:] I can't be trusted with that information.
[His eyebrows draw up, and he looks down. The sarcasm in that last sentence fades out into sincerity. He isn't trustworthy. He's hurt people, even when he hasn't meant to. Even when he's tried not to.]
....I can't be trusted to do anything, really. Everything I try that's more complicated than lightbulbs turns into a catastrophe, no matter how careful I try to be! Even the quantum entangler I put together to send people's pets home with them when they vanish is only going to cause more unrest, because every predictive model for it only works with wardens!
....
--I'm not good at being here. Not like some people are. Some people are so popular that it doesn't matter if they go around lying, killing, or torturing other passengers, and the Barge never gets any worse because of it. But even when I thought I'd finally found something I could do to help, something that wouldn't hurt anybody, I--it still went wrong. I was wrong.
I really believed in this. Thought it'd be worth it, if it meant inmates would have a better shot at coming back to life. But it's just caused trouble. I've just caused trouble. I'm no good as a warden, no good as a scientist, and...
[no good at being around normal people.]
...anyway. The project's scrapped. I won't try anything like it again. Maybe someone around here is capable of changing things for the better, but I have to accept that I'm not.
I'm sorry for everything that's come out of this. You should never have listened to me. I just hope nobody's died this time.

[Ford isn't around his usual places. He's missing from meals, the gym, the enclosure, the greenhouse.
But his cabin door's still there. He's still aboard the ship.]

You're here to give the watch back, right? You can keep it if you want. I've disabled the data collection.

Within it is roughly three days' worth of food, fairly creatively wedged in to accommodate some extras: one quite large, quite fuzzy sweater, and one copy of Watership Down. And one note, brief even for the index card it's written on.]
Deep breath. I don't think anyone is ever meant to have answers. I do think it makes wanting them braver.

I can tell you from what I know of James...
It probably mattered a lot to him that you cared. That you wanted to find these things out. That you made actual, tangible effort.
In a lot of ways, that's what he wanted more than anything. Someone to care about whether he disappeared or not, and more in that category is better than less.
So. You didn't just cause trouble. Okay?
private
I have caused a disproportionate amount of trouble for the amount of benefit I have given the ship, but I will take the thought counting in Flint's case into the equation. I just wish I could have given him something more tangible.

He threw a tantrum a bit ago because of this data but now he feels....guilty? Ow. Is this what guilt feels like? He didn't feel it too much before, except for where he singed Hange's arm.
Now he's feeling really. Well. Kind of bad about the way he freaked out. And it's not a feeling he enjoys. Not fun.
He haunts around the ship for the next few hours, but eventually caves and drops down to sit in front of Ford's door like a pesky stray guard!raccoon, knocking at the door behind him]

Who is it?
[It sounds like someone who is only not guarded because he's tired, and also possibly under the influence of alcohol.]

I do not believe that any attempt at scientific enquiry is wasted, Ford.
I ...
I come from a time that was on the verge of great discoveries—changes in understanding that transformed the world. The germ theory of disease, evolution, antibiotics, vaccinations—all of these came after my earthly death, and rendered nearly everything that I had learnt or accepted as true ... invalid.
But I still do not believe my education—imperfect as it is by the standards of the future—was a waste. We in our time did our best, with the tools we had, and that time was not wasted—indeed, only because we erred could those who came after us advance.
I know we have had cross words in the past, but let me say that I do admire your work. Even if it seems to you that it has borne no fruit except unhappiness.

So, I'm...I'm messing up because I'm assuming that not bathing keeps you healthy, because I don't have a microscope? Metaphorically.

You really think its going to be better with no one ever even trying to figure this place out?
no subject
I can't do it, Rhys! Every time I try, it's got consequences I didn't anticipate, and nothing ever comes out of it!
I'm not saying no one should ever try. I'm saying it has to be someone who isn't as bad at it as I am!

KID... DON'T LET HIM GET IN YOUR HEAD.
[then, of course, Ford has his comm under the couch, so Bill doesn't get a response.
But not getting a response is actually alarming (did someone kill him? Someone killed Luke before.) so he glides over to Ford's cabin in the mindscape, clear through the door since the access filter doesn't keep him out.]

He doesn't say anything on the network. He might not always be great at anything to do with emotion, but it's more than clear that this needs a a more personal touch, and so it is that a moment or three later, he's knocking on Ford's door; a bottle of wine tucked under his arm.]

Oh no. Oh god oh shit oh man it's Tesla. Whose bar he raided at, like, 7am this morning.]
Just a minute!
[There's some shuffling and some clinking as Ford shoves the bottles of alcohol he stole from the bar into the fridge, behind a bit of taxidermy, and underneath an armchair cushion.]
Okay! Come in!
[He opens the door.
Ford has, pretty obviously, already been drinking.]

Where are you? Can I come there?
[For what it's worth, Luke didn't understand Ford's previous warnings enough to be really concerned--for one thing, they'd already completely messed up every world they'd come from by coming there. So he's not entirely sure how this was different to begin with.
But he knows Ford is hurting, and he hasn't been around enough.]

I'm sorry, that's shitty and disappointing, and I've been there.
Come on, let's do something. We'll watch a movie and eat popcorn and watch movies that centre around unknowable knowledge- Raiders of the Lost Arc. It'll be- well, it won't be fun, you'll still be miserable but it will be distracting.
