Forty-First Shot
[Filtered to everyone but Shiro]
[The first time he left the Barge, Mickey hadn't made any big announcements about it. He'd told the people who needed to know, which amounted to very few, and set off the next day with only minor regrets.
This time, though, he has one great big fucking regret, and he has no idea what to do about it. He can't stay until Shiro's better, he knows. He just can't. But he also can't just leave her the way she is now, either. He'd never forgive himself if he took off without even trying.
So here he is, packed up and ready to make his goodbyes, but for this.]
Hey.
Can somebody out there tell me they know what the actual fuck to do about Shiro right now?
[Filtered to all close CR]
Hey, uh. Not to kill the beach party vibe or whatever, but I'm taking off again. I got the baby-face to get back to, and I burn like a mofo anyway, so...
Yeah.
You assholes ever wanna hit up the South Side, let me know, I guess.
[Private to Pietro]
I ever tell you I got four brothers? Back home, I mean, not like from here.
[Spam for Shiro]
[One last fucking try, he tells himself. Maybe it'll work. He can't say he believes in God now any more than he did two years ago, but he's damn sure seen miracles happen anyway. He tracks her down before he leaves, approaching carefully this time.]

She doesn't love killing. That's not her. That's the shit they did to her.
[Everyone Minus Shiro Filter]
But if he can be an unapologetic ass about it at the same time, what's stopping him?]
Ah. The eponymous They.
Seeing as how I'm flying blind here, I'll take your word for it. For now. What else is in the Need to Know file?
[Everyone Minus Shiro Filter]
Something's going on with her right now.
[Everyone Minus Shiro Filter]
Anything harder you can give me to go on other than something?

She's not Shiro. Not anymore.
[He's tired, worn down by the Land of the Dead and the aftermath alike, and it shows in the hollow, defeated quality that colors his words.]

The fuck is that supposed to mean?

Are you at least passingly familiar with the concept of multiple personalities? I would assume you would be - it's fairly common in fiction, even if it's usually portrayed unrealistically.

You've earned it, mate.
Try not to end up needin' to come back here, yeah?
Private
Maybe when I'm old and the rugrat inevitably fucks something up.

Well, they're all assholes, and Jamie and Tony haven't lived with us for years, and-- Christ knows what's going on with Joey, he's in and out all the damn time--
Whatever. The point is, we got a lotta empty beds if you end up needing one.

Maybe I'll stop by some time. Visit. Your deal fix things up right for your family?

[It's dry as ever, but Mickey probably knows him well enough by now to hear the humor in it.]

[But, you know, fondly. ...Relatively.]

[Bland, accepting and returning in kind.]
I understand this is the part for well wishing and advice, but my advice is don't listen to anything I have to say.
