[Toad put off seeing anyone about his shoulder for a couple of days, just until he was certain it wasn't going to heal on its own, but eventually the sheer pain and uselessness of his right arm got to him.

Hair hiding his eyes, he mutters into the communicator]

What was that? I've just had a whole decade hit me all at once. S' not fun. And no, I'm not feeling rehabbed.

[He raises his head, speaks more directly:]

Oh...yeah. So. My shoulder's out of joint. Would the Infirmary handle this kind of thing? Do you have some system with credits here? Would be my luck. What about labor hours? Blood? Will they take blood? I'd rather not be a test subject. I mean, I can do it. Have done it, but I'd rather not.

And to anyone who talked to me while I was younger, I was stupid. We're not gettin' off this boat. Anything I might have promised, I can't do it.

[With that he abruptly switches off the feed.]

Yeah, I know; the free clinics where I come from are shitty, too. This one really is, though. I work there; I know.

The food here's good. It's more like school food than prison chow.

Usually long lines in an infirmary 's not a good sign.

I used to work at a good school. Least the food was good. The bathrooms would attack you.
School I went to was standard poor British food. Mash and sometimes bangers to go with it.

You can get British food here if you want. We got a lot of British people.

I don't want British food, especially not orphanage food. And I've been in the US for years now. [He shrugs.]

Are you from the south? Of the US I mean.

I'm from Pennsylvania. But I'm from the country, and people say we're kinda like the south.

Is that near Kentucky?

Where I'm from's called Appalachia. We kinda sound like we're from the south, I guess. At least that's what I heard.

Well, I do tend to ask "would you mind not doing it again," but I tend to reserve that for the people who really get themselves maimed or ill.

[Todd tends to ignore the private function on the assumption that it wouldn't actually keep anybody out, because who'd ever respect his privacy? He usually turns it off when he replies, even, to annoy any wardens who attempt it at him. But for Mort, he doesn't go to the trouble. His room, though, he does try to protect. He doesn't even want his few friends in his cabin.]

Yeah, I have a chair I shove under the doorknob now, too.

Yeah, I stepped in to my room for a second and this guy tries to break in, grab my wallet.

Nothing in there, but I wasn't gonna give him the idea he can break in my room any time he wants without a struggle.

[He's glad he's skipped that one.]

All I usually get is a warden bangin' on the door at the start of every month. I'm way down at the bottom, though. Not a lotta people go there.

Why at the start of every month?

That's when you get a new one. Unless they give yah one to keep.

Why can't they just stick us with one and leave it at that?

Nah, man, no way. Then you gotta be somebody's job. An' they get their payoff based on you, so they ain't gonna leave ya alone.

'S payment based on you doing what exactly? I hear "rehab" but what does that even look like?

[He really doesn't, one of his many problems with the whole system.]

I guess people do it sometimes if they suck up enough.

[A few people have graduated while Todd's been here, but no one he knows well enough or cares about enough to have any sense of what might have changed.]

I see you've already gotten your answer, but I will add that I do not believe any of us would turn down a hand either.

I'm afraid I don't have anything to do with either of those. My engineering experience is strictly medical. And my electrical expertise is...rather specialized.

Maybe. But there's usually some universal currency. Favors. Or something. At least the ability to turn down jobs at will.

I never liked head games, but this place is comfortable most of the time. As long as the other shoe never drops.

It's gonna at some point, but we get through it alright, usually. Most of the time, it's not so bad bein' here.
